From pace rivalry to UAE partnership: Lee and Akhtar reunite for ILT20

Former fast-bowling rivals Brett Lee and Shoaib Akhtar are set to reunite as brand ambassadors for the UAE’s International League T20 (ILT20).

The two legendary pacers shared a fierce rivalry during their playing days but have remained close friends away from the cricket field.

Two Fast-Bowling Legends Reunite

Lee and Akhtar were among the fastest bowlers in cricket history, with both famously reaching the 100 mph (160 kph) mark during their careers.

Their battles in Australia-Pakistan matches often produced thrilling contests as both bowlers troubled batters with extreme pace, bounce and accurate yorkers.

The pair appeared together in Dubai on Wednesday for the launch of the fifth edition of the ILT20.

Brett Lee Excited by ILT20’s Growth

Lee, who is now based in Dubai, praised the impact the ILT20 has made on cricket in the UAE and the wider region.

He highlighted the league’s competitive nature, pointing out that the first four seasons produced four different champions. Lee also expressed excitement about the return of several international stars, including Marcus Stoinis, Finn Allen and Sunil Narine.

Lee and Akhtar to Share Their Experience

Lee said he was excited to work alongside Akhtar and bring their experience and different perspectives to the ILT20.

The former Australian fast bowler noted that he and Akhtar had known and worked with each other for around 27 years. Their shared history of competing to reach the 160 kph mark has remained an important part of their friendship.

Lee Hopes UAE Produces Fast-Bowling Star

Lee also hopes the ILT20 can help develop a world-class Emirati cricketer.

He believes young local players can benefit greatly from training and playing alongside experienced international stars. Spending time with top players will allow emerging cricketers to learn about preparation, training and handling pressure during major matches.

Lee hopes the UAE’s young talent can eventually produce a bowler capable of challenging the speed records set by the world’s fastest bowlers.

Shoaib Akhtar Welcomes Lee to the ILT20

Akhtar said Lee’s appointment as an ambassador is a major boost for the league.

The Pakistani great highlighted the opportunities for youngsters to watch, learn from and interact with cricket legends. He also praised the ILT20 for providing strong conditions for fast bowlers.

Akhtar said having Lee alongside him brings back memories of their rivalry, friendship and banter from their playing days.

ILT20 Season Five Set for November and December

The fifth season of the ILT20 will be played across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah during November and December.

The tournament will feature several major T20 stars, including Finn Allen, David Miller, Heinrich Klaasen, Jason Holder, Sunil Narine, Shimron Hetmyer, Nicholas Pooran and Rashid Khan.

Defending Champions Desert Vipers

The Desert Vipers will enter the fifth season as defending champions.

The Gulf Giants won the inaugural ILT20 title in 2023, followed by MI Emirates in 2024 and Dubai Capitals in 2025.

Sharjah Warriorz and Abu Dhabi Knight Riders are still waiting for their first ILT20 title.
