The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has expressed confidence that India will eventually receive both the men’s and women’s Asia Cup trophies after the latest controversy surrounding the trophy presentation ceremony.
The issue emerged after the Indian women’s cricket team chose not to accept the Women’s Asia Cup 2026 trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman Mohsin Naqvi following their title-winning performance in Dubai. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia later said that the board expects both Asia Cup trophies to return to India soon.
India Women Win Asia Cup but Skip Trophy Presentation
India produced a dominant performance in the Women’s Asia Cup final, defeating Sri Lanka by 72 runs to secure their eighth title. The team scored 183/5 before bowling Sri Lanka out for 111.
Smriti Mandhana scored 59, while Shafali Verma made 68 to give India a strong start. With the ball, Sree Charani picked up four wickets and Deepti Sharma claimed three as India completed a convincing victory.
Why Did Team India Refuse to Receive the Trophy?
The Indian players did not take part in the official trophy presentation because the trophy was set to be handed over by ACC chairman Mohsin Naqvi.
According to reports, the BCCI had already informed the ACC about its position before the final. The board also suggested alternative arrangements for the trophy presentation, including having another ACC official hand over the trophy. However, the issue remained unresolved, leading India to stay away from the ceremony.
BCCI Says Both Trophies Will Return to India
The Women’s Asia Cup incident brought back memories of the men’s Asia Cup in 2025, when the Indian men’s team also declined to receive the trophy from Naqvi.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the board remains confident that India will receive both the women’s and men’s Asia Cup trophies. The BCCI has maintained that winning the tournament and receiving the trophy are separate matters, with the team’s sporting achievement remaining the main focus.
Amol Muzumdar: India Are the Champions
India women’s head coach Amol Muzumdar backed the BCCI’s decision and praised the players for their performance throughout the tournament.
He stressed that the team’s biggest achievement was becoming Asia Cup champions and that the players were proud of what they had accomplished on the field. With the tournament now behind them, India are expected to shift their attention towards their upcoming challenges, including the Asian Games.
A Major Victory Despite the Trophy Controversy
While the trophy presentation created headlines, India’s on-field performance remained the biggest highlight. Harmanpreet Kaur and her team completed an impressive campaign and added another Asia Cup title to India’s record.
The BCCI’s latest statement suggests that the trophy issue is not over yet. However, the board remains confident that both Asia Cup trophies will eventually be brought back to India.
For now, India can celebrate what matters most—the team has once again been crowned Asian champions.
