FIFA will likely miss its target for gender equality in World Cup prize money. President Gianni Infantino previously promised equal prize pots for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
A Substantial Financial Gap
The men’s tournament recently offered a prize pot of 655 million dollars across 48 teams. The 2027 women’s tournament in Brazil will feature 32 competing nations. Reports indicate the women’s prize pool will reach approximately 220 million dollars. This figure doubles the 2023 prize pot but remains far below the men’s equivalent. FIFA officials attribute this gap to projected commercial income from the tournament.
Equal Preparation Funding Secured
The FIFA council will officially confirm the prize money allocations in December. However, the governing body has already secured some financial improvements for female players. Every competing nation will receive 2.5 million dollars in preparation funding. This specific figure matches the preparation money given to men’s teams. Furthermore, FIFA will guarantee business class flights and single hotel rooms for all female players.
