Indian Football Team Coach Igor Stimac’s Contract Extended Until 2026
In a significant development, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has extended the contract of senior national team head coach Igor Stimac until 2026. This move comes as recognition of Stimac’s successful tenure, which includes overseeing three title triumphs this year. Furthermore, the contract specifies that Stimac will automatically receive a two-year extension if India qualifies for the third round of FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.
Igor Stimac, a former member of Croatia’s 1998 FIFA World Cup third-placed team, took charge of the Indian national team in 2019. Under his guidance, the Blue Tigers have achieved significant success, winning four major titles, including two SAFF Championships.
AIFF’s secretary general, Shaji Prabhakaran, made the official announcement during a virtual interaction, with Stimac alongside him and Mahesh Gawli, the assistant coach of the senior men’s team.
Stimac’s recent accomplishments include leading the Indian men’s team to the round of 16 at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. This achievement marked the team’s first progression to this stage in the continental competition in 13 years.
Speaking about the contract extension, Prabhakaran emphasized the AIFF’s commitment to ensuring stability in the national team. He highlighted the recent string of victories and strong performances, stressing the need to maintain progress and not halt the ongoing process.
Igor Stimac expressed his appreciation for the trust placed in him by the AIFF, emphasizing the importance of having a stable and trustworthy staff around him. He also recognized the significance of the continued progress of the national team.
In addition to the contract extension news, the AIFF announced that the I-League is scheduled to commence on October 28, with fixture details set to be released soon. This development promises an exciting future for Indian football, with Igor Stimac leading the national team towards further success.
