Chennai Super Kings have finalised their coaching staff ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League season. The franchise appointed former players Albie Morkel and Mohit Sharma as assistant coaches on Tuesday.
Franchise Legends Return
The new appointments mark a significant structural reset for the five-time IPL champions. Morkel and Sharma will work under newly appointed head coach Zaheer Khan. Zaheer recently replaced Stephen Fleming, who managed the team for 16 years. Morkel represented CSK from 2008 to 2013 and helped the team win two IPL titles. He most recently served as the head coach of the Joburg Super Kings in the SA20 league.
Sharma Takes Bowling Role
Mohit Sharma joins the setup specifically to oversee the bowling department. The former India fast bowler began his IPL career with Chennai and won the Purple Cap during the 2014 season. Sharma expressed his excitement about returning to the franchise that launched his career. He stated he looks forward to working alongside Zaheer to develop the team’s bowling strategies.
Finalising The Backroom Staff
The franchise also confirmed the addition of former England cricketer Gareth Batty as an assistant coach. Batty recently left his role as head coach of Surrey to join the Indian franchise. Sridharan Sriram remains in his position as an assistant coach. James Foster will also continue his duties as the fielding coach. The new coaching group will immediately focus on finalising the player retention list ahead of the IPL mini-auction in December.
