Chinese Brands Drop Kylian Mbappé Following Mao Zedong Comments

Several major Chinese companies have terminated their sponsorship agreements with Kylian Mbappé. The commercial backlash followed a recent interview where the Real Madrid forward referred to late Chinese leader Mao Zedong as a dictator.

Talk Show Comments Trigger Backlash

The controversy began when Mbappé appeared on the French talk show The Bridge. He discussed a popular internet meme that superimposed his face onto an image of Mao. Mbappé laughed and described the figure as a Chinese dictator. The meme stems from a running joke among fans who call the French striker “the dictator” due to his perceived influence in football. The original video clip spread rapidly across Chinese social media platforms.

Sponsors React To Public Outcry

Chinese internet users and football fans quickly condemned the remarks. They accused the player of disrespecting a revered national figure while profiting from the Chinese market. Domestic brands responded swiftly to the growing public anger. Mengniu, a major dairy producer, and beverage company Dongpeng both announced the termination of their partnerships with Mbappé. Both companies issued statements confirming a zero-tolerance policy for behaviour that offends national sentiments.

Broadcaster Suspends Coverage

The fallout extends beyond personal endorsements. State broadcaster CCTV announced it will stop showing La Liga matches featuring Real Madrid. The Chinese foreign ministry also addressed the situation. Spokesperson Lin Jian stated that words hurting the feelings of the Chinese people would naturally face opposition. Mbappé and Real Madrid have not yet issued official statements regarding the terminated contracts.
