RCB Eliminated: Shubhman Gill thrashes Banglore, Gujarat faces Chennai in Qualifier 1, and Lucknow takes on Mumbai

Shubhman Gill after Century

Shubman Gill’s dazzling 52-ball 104 not out trumped Virat Kohli’s sumptuous unbeaten 101 as Gujarat Titans edged Royal Challengers Bangalore in a high-scoring thriller by six wickets in the final league game of the IPL season in Bengaluru.

With the heartbreaking defeat, RCB’s journey in this year’s competition came to an end. With Mumbai Indians winning the afternoon game, Faf du Plessis and co. needed an outright win to qualify for the knockouts but Gill smashed his second consecutive century of the season, dashing the hosts’ hopes of qualifying for the playoffs.

RCB’s defeat also meant that Mumbai became the fourth team to officially qualify for the knockouts.

Defending champions Gujarat Titans will now face Chennai Super Kings in Qualifier 1 on Tuesday while Mumbai will be up against Lucknow Super Giants the Eliminator on Wednesday.

After Kohli scored a 61-ball 101 in RCB’s 197 for five, it looked like the best effort on the day but Gill, who will be the torchbearer of Indian batting for the next 10 years, showed that he is better than the best.

What Kohli did well, Gill did that better as his unbeaten ton saw Titans chase down the target with elan. Like former India captain Kohli, this was Gill’s second successive hundred.

Gill slammed eights sixes and five fours.

Titans thus finished the league engagements with 20 points while CSK ended second with 17 points ahead of Lucknow Super Giants due to better net run-rate. Mumbai Indians, after their eight-wicket win against SRH, were back in the last four with 16 points.
