Union Berlin has successfully secured the return of former German forward Kevin Volland from AS Monaco, marking a notable addition to their squad.

Volland, who previously played for 1860 Munich, Hoffenheim, and Bayer Leverkusen before his move to France in 2020, has inked an undisclosed contract with Union Berlin.

The 31-year-old expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “My roots are in the Bundesliga, and I’ve always kept an eye on it. Having the opportunity to now play at the highest level with Union makes me immensely happy. The club and the team have ambitious plans, and I’m committed to contributing my best.”

Volland showcased his skills with 39 goals and 24 assists in 115 competitive appearances for Monaco. Prior to his Monaco tenure, he contributed to more than 80 goals in 149 matches for Leverkusen and over 70 in 144 outings for Hoffenheim. His career began to bloom with 1860 Munich during the 2010/11 season. In his Bundesliga journey encompassing 247 games, he has registered an impressive 77 goals and 62 assists.

Oliver Ruhnert, Union’s sporting director, commented on Volland’s return, noting, “During our discussions with Kevin, it was clear how eager he was to make a comeback to Germany and the Bundesliga. His goal-scoring prowess has been evident on both national and international stages over the years. We’re thrilled to have him on board.”

Volland’s signing is another testament to Union’s ambitious intentions. The club, which entered the UEFA Champions League group stage for the first time in the previous season, recently secured the services of German international left-back Robin Gosens from Inter Milan. Further bolstering their ranks, talents such as Brenden Aaronson from the USA and Chelsea’s David Fofana have been brought to the Alten Försterei on loan during the summer transfer period.

Since their arrival in the top tier of German football in 2019, Union Berlin is set to kick off the 2023/24 Bundesliga campaign against Mainz on Sunday. The club will also discover their Champions League group stage opponents when the draw is conducted in Monaco on August 31st.
