Filipina tennis sensation Alexandra Eala produced another impressive performance by defeating defending champion Leylah Fernandez to book her place in the Washington Open quarterfinals on Wednesday.
The 21-year-old defeated the seventh-seeded Canadian 6-2, 7-6 (7/1), overcoming a dramatic second-set deficit to continue her remarkable run on the WTA Tour.
Eala Fights Back from 5-1 Down
Eala dominated the opening set 6-2, capitalizing on a series of unforced errors from Fernandez.
The momentum shifted in the second set as Fernandez raced to a 5-1 lead, appearing poised to force a deciding set. However, Eala mounted an incredible comeback, winning five consecutive games to lead 6-5.
Fernandez held serve to push the match into a tie-break, but Eala quickly took control, surging to a 3-0 lead before sealing the victory with a stunning cross-court forehand and converting her first match point.

After the match, Eala admitted the moment felt surreal.
“Everything’s kind of a blur right now. I really made an effort to stay in the moment, and I was ready for anything that could have happened,” she said.
“And luckily — well, it wasn’t a lot of luck — but luckily it went my way.”

The victory also served as redemption for Eala, who had lost to Fernandez in straight sets during their meeting in Stuttgart earlier this year.
