Sharma, bowlers help India thrash England in T20 opener

T20

Opener Abhishek Sharma’s 34-ball 79 and his teammate’s strong bowling performance helped India win against England in the first T20 match.

Spinner Varun Chakravarthy and fast bowler Arshdeep Singh split five wickets as India ended England’s innings at 132 when the hosts chose to bat first.

After losing two of his partners Sharma continued his strong performance and hit eight sixes plus five fours during his 20-ball fifty to lead India to a 12.5-over victory and take a 1-0 series lead in five matches.

Our winning toss kicked off the T20 match with high energy. Our bowlers set up the win before our batting team finished it off according to Suryakumar Yadav.

This series prepares both teams for next month’s 50-over Champions Trophy by starting with T20 matches then three ODIs.

England captain Jos Buttler scored 68 runs from his 44 balls yet his teammates struggled to get going.

On the third delivery of play Phil Salt exited for zero when his bat leading edge flew straight to Sanju Samson’s gloves.

In the third over Arshdeep Singh ended Ben Duckett’s innings by getting him out for four runs and Rinku Singh made a fantastic grab of the ball as it came off the covers.

Buttler responded with four boundaries from his shots against Hardik Pandya as he rebuilt the inning alongside Harry Brook in their 48-run partnership.

With a surprise googly Chakravarthy sent Brook back to the hut then eliminated Liam Livingstone’s bat when the ball hit the stumps.

When Chakravarthy dismissed Buttler in his third over of 23 runs he reached his fifty in 34 balls but then the pace of scoring increased too much and Buttler followed the dismissal.

The Indian bowlers including Arshdeep and Axar Patel finished with two wickets each while Pandya added two more through an outstanding run out at the last moment to dismiss England in 20 overs.

Varun maintains solid preparation while Arshdeep steps up to handle more responsibility. Our team receives wide latitude to try new methods according to Yadav.

In just four deliveries, Jofra Archer eliminated Sanju Samson for 26 runs and Suryakumar Yadav for no score from India’s total of 41 runs in 4.1 overs.

Sharma continued to score rapidly which disrupted the English bowlers’ rhythm.

The 24-year-old Sharma lost to Adil Rashid but he performed brilliantly for the enthusiastic Indian fans.

England received their first loss under new white-ball coach Brendon McCullum following his promotion from the Test team leadership role.

India made a surprising decision by leaving out Mohammed Shami even though he had returned to the team after recovering from a heel injury that sidelined him for more than 12 months.

The second T20 match takes place on Saturday in Chennai.
