India could make a change to their playing XI for the second T20 International against New Zealand after wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan suffered a groin injury.
The setback has increased the chances of teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi featuring in the upcoming encounter.
India won the opening match by four wickets after successfully chasing a target of 226 runs.
The second T20I is scheduled to take place in Christchurch on October 24, with the team management assessing its options.
Ishan Kishan’s Injury Raises Selection Concerns
India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak revealed that Kishan experienced discomfort in his groin during the series opener.
The injury also influenced the team’s batting order, with Tilak Varma moving up to number three while Kishan batted lower down the order.
Kishan managed just one run from three deliveries in the first match.
The medical team is monitoring his condition, and his availability for the next game has been ruled out following the injury assessment.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Emerges as a Replacement Option
Kishan’s absence could provide Sooryavanshi with an opportunity to return to India’s playing XI.
Kotak indicated that the young left-handed batter is among the strongest candidates to replace Kishan if he remains unavailable.
The 15-year-old has attracted attention with his aggressive batting and impressive performances in T20 cricket.
However, the final selection will depend on the team’s combination and the medical staff’s assessment of the available players.
India Aim to Extend Their Lead in the T20I Series
India will look to build on their opening victory and strengthen their position in the five-match series.
Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson have been regular options at the top of the order, making any potential reshuffle an important selection decision.
Sooryavanshi’s inclusion could offer India another attacking option, although the team management must balance youth and experience.
All eyes will be on India’s final combination ahead of the Christchurch encounter.
