On This Day: Sachin Tendulkar Breached the 200-Run Mark For the First Time in ODIs

It was on this very day 10 years ago that God of Cricket Sachin Tendulkar achieved something in Gwalior that was never expected to happen in ODI cricket. He became the first batsman to score an ODI double hundred. It was also an unbeaten knock from the Little Master. Back then, getting to this feat was considered impossible, but it was Tendulkar who made it possible. Since Sachin Tendulkar’s trendsetting 200, five more players have reached that milestone in ODI internationals. Rohit Sharma, Virender Sehwag, Chris Gayle, Martin Guptill and Fakhar Zaman are the other names in the list. Rohit has scored three ODI double tons and tops the list at the moment.

Sachin Tendulkar’s trendsetting 200 gave the batsmen of the modern era that a feat of this sort can be breached in ODIs as well. Meanwhile, Sachin scored his one and only 200 in ODIs against South Africa in Gwalior. This was the second match of the three-match series and India won the toss under MS Dhoni and decided to bat first. This South African attack had the likes of Dale Steyn, Jacques Kallis, Wayne Parnell and Charl Langavelt. However, none of them escaped the wrath of Sachin’s bat. He hit 25 fours and three sixes during his 147-ball knock.

Dinesh Karthik (79), Yusuf Pathan (26) and skipper MS Dhoni (68) also came up with important contributions en route to Sachin Tendulkar’s trendsetting 200. Very fittingly, it was MS Dhoni who was at the other end when Tendulkar took his 200th run in the very last ball of India’s innings. This made the moment even more special for the Indian cricket fans. The entire dressing room stood up to congratulate the Little Master on his memorable knock. India ended on 401/3 from their 50 overs.

In their quest for chasing 402 to win, South Africa were bowled out for 248. AB De Villiers scored a valiant 114* but it was not enough to see his side home. Apart from De Villiers, there were no other major contributions with Hashim Amla being the second top-scorer of the innings with 34.

The Indian bowlers put together a compelling bowling effort. S Sreesanth took three wickets, while Ashish Nehra, Ravindra Jadeja and Yusuf Pathan took two each. India ultimately won the game by India won by 153 runs and Tendulkar for his historic knock was awarded the Man of the Match.

Build Up to Sachin Tendulkar’s Trendsetting 200

Tendulkar paced his innings beautifully on the way to his trendsetting 200. He scored his first fifty off 37 balls. The next fifty was scored in just 28 balls as he started upping the ante. In the process, he also added 63 runs with Yusuf Pathan. He scored 100 off just 65 balls.

Sachin Tendulkar’s trendsetting 200 next saw the Little Master get to the 150-run mark. He took 29 balls to get to his next fifty and by this time was playing free-flowing strokes and taking the game to the opposition. Now he was on 150 off 94 balls. Sachin scored his next fifty runs taking a bit longer time and in 53 balls.

Tendulkar also surpassed his previous best score of 186 in ODIs during his trendsetting knock. After India won by 153 runs, Tendulkar was adjudged as the Man of the Match for his mammoth knock.

Meanwhile, Sachin Tendulkar’s trendsetting 200 has a unique similarity with Chris Gayle’s double ton which he scored against Zimbabwe in the 2015 World Cup. Gayle also scored his highest ODI score on this very day and it marks its sixth anniversary. Both Gayle and Sachin also played the same number of deliveries. Gayle scored 215 with 26 boundaries during his knock. The Windies won the game by 73 runs in the Duckworth Lewis method after they posted 372-2 in their 50 overs. Zimbabwe were bowled out for 289.
