RB Leipzig Begins DFB Cup Campaign

RB Leipzig

RB Leipzig, the defending champions, are set to kick off their DFB Cup campaign with an away fixture against Bundesliga 2’s Wiesbaden. Both teams were in action over the weekend, with Wiesbaden losing 2-0 at home to Elversberg, while Leipzig secured a victory against Gladbach.

Wiesbaden, who recently returned to Bundesliga 2 via the play-offs after a three-year absence, has collected eight points from their seven matches this season. Head coach Markus Kauczinski, who previously faced Leipzig four times at Bundesliga 2 level with Karlsruhe, is aiming to make a strong impact. Croatian striker Ivan Prtajin is the top scorer for Wiesbaden with two goals so far this term.

RB Leipzig, on the other hand, has been in remarkable form, winning 13 of their last 14 competitive matches dating back to the previous season. Although they lost their Bundesliga opener, they bounced back by defeating Bayern Munich in the Supercup and winning their last five assignments. Xavi Simons, who is on loan from Paris Saint-Germain, has been a standout player with three goals and four assists. Timo Werner, who came on as a substitute, scored the winning goal in their recent match against Gladbach. With a busy schedule ahead, manager Marco Rose is likely to utilize his deep squad, including goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi, who may make his first start in a year. However, Willi Orban and Dani Olmo remain sidelined.

RB Leipzig has a chance to make history by becoming the first team to win three consecutive DFB Cups. They have been dominant in the competition, winning 12 of their last 12 matches, and they are one of only seven teams to win back-to-back DFB Cups. Since their promotion to the Bundesliga in 2016, Leipzig has reached the final in four out of seven DFB Cup campaigns, losing only once to non-Bundesliga opposition.

Wiesbaden, competing in the DFB Cup for the 15th time, has had success in the past, navigating the first round six times and reaching the quarter-finals in 2008/09. As these two teams prepare to face off in the DFB Cup, all eyes will be on whether RB Leipzig can continue their impressive cup run and make history with a third consecutive victory. With both sides eager to advance in the competition, this match promises to be an exciting clash of footballing talent.
