Real Madrid eye Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso

After having a silent transfer window by their standards so far, Real Madrid are reportedly ready to splash their money and strengthen their squad going into the new season. The 4-2 loss to Atletico Madrid has come as a reality check for Los Blancos who are looking to acquire a few players before the window ends.

According to reports in Daily Star, they are looking to reinforce their defence, especially the left-back position where there is no back up for Brazil's Marcelo after Theo Hernandez was sent on loan to Real Sociedad. Julen Lopetegui's men are looking to sign Chelsea's Marcos Alonso for the position as the manager wants someone to put pressure on Marcelo to perform.

Lopetegui knows Alonso well from his time with Real Madrid's age-group sides. His ability to play at centre-half will help in getting the deal done as Lopetegui has been reportedly asked the board for a defender and a striker. Alonso was a part of the Real Madrid academy and has also played for the first team in 2010 when he came on as a substitute for Gonzalo Higuain during a 2-0 win over Racing Santander.

He managed to play just one minute before he left the club and joined Bolton Wanderers. Alonso later played for Fiorentina and Sunderland before he was signed by Chelsea in the 2016 transfer deadline day for £25 million.

While his move to Chelsea initially looked like a panic buy, Alonso proved his critics wrong as he impressed everyone with both his attacking and defensive abilities and has become one of the top-scoring defenders in Europe.

Chelsea are unlikely to let him go because the transfer deadline has already closed in England and it will be very difficult for the Blues to find a replacement for the Spaniard.
