IPL 2020 Auctions: Five Overseas Players Who Might Go Unsold

Over the years, overseas cricketers have played a big part in helping IPL franchises win titles. Lasith Malinga, Sunil Narine, Rashid Khan, David Warner, Kane Williamson, Chris Gayle, AB De Villiers are prominent examples of players who have made headlines in the IPL with their performances. The IPL 2020 auctions in Kolkata on December 19 will be an eventful evening for the overseas players as there are 29 spots to be filled up by them. The auctions will be a captivating event with the franchises going all out to buy the player they desire.

Having discussed the Indian players who might go unsold in our previous IPL segment, we get down to discussing the overseas players who might go unsold this season.

David Willey

Willey was roped in as Kedar Jadhav’s replacement in the CSK outfit in IPL 2019. Willey’s ability to swing the new ball and his explosive batting traits was what made the management sign him. However, Willey was a misfit in the squad as he played just three games and gave away runs at an economy of nearly 10. With him not performing well for CSK in the previous IPL season, it is very likely that Willey will be ignored in the upcoming IPL auctions in Kolkata.

Andrew Tye

Tye has had polar opposite IPL seasons since joining Kings XI Punjab in IPL 2018. He was a part of Gujarat Lions in 2017, the year he made his IPL debut. He won the purple cap in 2018 having taken 24 wickets. Tye failed to live up to his reputation in the next season as he picked up just three wickets in six games before being dropped from the playing XI.

Tye’s unimpressive record in the last IPL season might just go against him this season as he might lose out on getting an IPL contract in the coming season.

Matthew Kelly

Australian born pacer Matthew Kelly was signed as South African pacer Anrich Nortje’s replacement by Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2019. However, he failed to get a game for the franchise in the tournament. He was ultimately released by KKR ahead of the auctions.

With franchises looking to buy experienced pacers who add value to their squad and increase its overall strength, Kelly being an unknown commodity in IPL cricket and inexperienced as well, franchises might not be too keen on buying him.

Angelo Mathews

Angelo Mathews made his last appearance in IPL cricket back in 2017 for Delhi Daredevils (Now Delhi Capitals). Mathews has always been seen as someone who has tremendous potential. However, he never really transpired that into performance in the IPL. His international form currently also has not been favoring him for an IPL contract. He has enlisted his name with a base price of 2 crores for the upcoming auction but his poor IPL record might go against him in getting a bid this season.

Beuran Hendricks

The South African pacer was a part of the Mumbai Indians squad last IPL season. He was a part of a bowling outfit that has the likes of Lasith Malinga, Jason Behrendorff, Jasprit Bumrah, Alzarri Joseph, Mitchell McCleneghan and Hardik Pandya. He failed to breach through them and did not get many matches to play for the four-time IPL champions. MI released Hendricks ahead of the IPL 2020 auctions hinting at the fact that they might not sign him again. Other franchises also wouldn’t be too excited about buying him as he doesn’t possess any reputation of being a successful IPL player.
