The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to announce the player retention regulations for the Indian Premier League (IPL) by the end of August, as reported by Cricbuzz. The new guidelines are expected to allow each of the ten franchises to retain up to six players, including the Right to Match (RTM) option, which lets teams retain players bought by other franchises.
This move aims to maintain team stability while providing some strategic flexibility. Despite several franchises advocating for the elimination of the ‘Mega Auction’—a periodic, large-scale player auction—the BCCI appears committed to retaining the current system. The decision reflects a balance between preserving competitive integrity and ensuring teams have the ability to keep their core players amid ongoing changes in the league.
In a recent interview, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah highlighted the importance of continuity in the Indian Premier League (IPL) player retention process. Shah remarked, “We’ve heard the views of all the franchises,” emphasizing that both minority and majority opinions are taken into account.
He noted, “Ultimately, the office-bearers of the BCCI will decide.” Shah acknowledged the differing perspectives among franchises: those with strong teams generally opposed the big auction, while those with weaker sides favored it. He stressed, “Continuity is important as shuffling affects the growth of the game.” Shah’s comments reflect the BCCI’s approach to balancing franchise interests with the need for stability and consistency in the league’s operations.
Another significant point under discussion is the potential increase in the number of matches from 74 to 84 for the next season. With the IPL expanding from eight to ten teams, the number of games has not risen proportionally. Ideally, there should be 94 matches including the playoffs and final, based on a home and away format. However, the tight international schedule , player workload, and limited window could pose challenges.
“Nothing is confirmed at this stage,” Shah remarked. “We will make a collective decision considering all factors. It’s crucial to account for the workload of the players and the available scheduling window. While the specifics are outlined in the contract, the final decision on how to proceed ultimately rests with the BCCI. We aim to balance player welfare with the operational needs of the league to ensure a fair and well-managed IPL season.”
Regarding the impact player rule, Shah commented, “We had an extensive discussion with franchise owners during our recent meeting. The impact player rule has both advantages and drawbacks. On the downside, it could diminish the role of all-rounders.
However, it also provides an opportunity for Indian players to showcase their talent. We must also consider the broadcaster, who invests significantly in the league. As an administrator, my priority is the overall growth of the game. We will make a final decision in the coming days.”
