Wataru Endo, in high spirits after Liverpool’s 4-2 victory over Newcastle United, is gearing up for the AFC Asian Cup with confidence. The midfielder, who has been a standout performer for Liverpool, showcased his skills in the recent Anfield triumph. Although leaving Liverpool temporarily for the Asian Cup brings mixed emotions, Endo emphasizes the importance of representing his national team.
Endo’s stellar performances have solidified his role as a key player under Jürgen Klopp since joining Liverpool from VfB Stuttgart in the summer. The 30-year-old, eager to captain Japan to success, expresses a bit of disappointment at missing critical Liverpool fixtures, including the Carabao Cup semi-finals against Fulham.
In an interview with Liverpoolfc.com, Endo acknowledges the dual emotions, stating, “Yes, a little bit actually. But you know I need to play for my national team as well. But I think the last few games I’ve played for this club, I have shown why I am here, so I go to Qatar, hopefully get a good result and then come back here.”
Leaving Liverpool at the top of the Premier League, three points ahead of Aston Villa, Endo is optimistic about the team’s recent form. Reflecting on the Newcastle clash, he considers it a massive win and a positive start to 2024. Aware of Newcastle’s physicality, Liverpool prepared to endure and executed their game plan well, according to Endo.
“It was a huge win for us and a good start for 2024,” he said. “We knew before the game that Newcastle is a very physical team, so we were ready to suffer, and I always try to get the ball, so we did that well actually in my opinion.”
Endo, donning the No. 3 shirt, has become a crucial part of Liverpool’s midfield, making 24 appearances and playing a total of 1287 minutes in the current season. With 917 successful passes, he has been a reliable presence on the pitch. Despite his achievements, Endo remains humble, expressing joy in playing for the Liverpool fans at Anfield and emphasizing the team’s collective effort.
“I’m really enjoying playing football in front of the Liverpool fans at Anfield. I just try to do my best in every game, and I’m so happy to be here. We are feeling great, but this is just the start of the new year, so we have to stay focused and just try to get ready for every game coming.”
As Endo prepares for the Asian Cup, Liverpool fans will eagerly await his return, hoping he brings his newfound confidence and success back to Anfield. The midfielder’s journey from the Premier League to international duty showcases the global impact of top-tier football and the pride players take in representing their nations on the grand stage.
