Australia have unveiled a robust 16-member squad for their three-Test series against South Africa. Australia have included a host of experienced international players but also younger options in a squad that should give them the best chance of another difficult red-ball tour.
Pat Cummins will lead a number of key players from Australia’s Test side as captain of the team. The senior pros including Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon have been picked for the series.
Labuschagne Retains Test Spot
The pivotal selection is Marnus Labuschagne (retained in Australia’s Test squad despite a horror run with the bat). Selector’s faith: While there was no place reserved for Labuschagne in the ODI side, the selector has retained his faith with the batter in Test cricket.
His selection provides him with a second chance to find his groove and establish himself in the Australian middle order.
Connolly and Neser Included
Given the rising stars of tomorrow an opportunity is also a factor for Australia, who have added Cooper Connolly to the squad. Michael Neser is fit again from a calf injury and may be able to add further experience to the attack.
Other members include spinner Matthew Kuhnemann, With Nathan Lyon, the 35-year-old spin veteran already in the squad, his inclusion gives Australia an extra spin option that could be crucial depending on how the South African conditions develop.
Three-Test Series to Begin in October
The first of the Tests will be held on 9 October at Durban, before relocating to Gqeberha for the second Test and finally Cape Town for the third Test.
Australia is praying their experienced team can produce the goods in distant lands. South Africa, though, will attempt to make a home advantage count against one of the world’s leading Test sides.
The series will also be crucial in the context of the wider World Test Championship campaign, giving both teams so much to play for over three matches.
Australia will bring a mixture of experience and youth to the series with a squad that has the potential to provide great depth both batting and bowling.
