ONE Championship 165: Superlek to Defend Flyweight Kickboxing Title Against Takeru as Rodtang Withdraws
In a significant turn of events, Superlek Kiatmoo9 is set to defend his ONE flyweight kickboxing world title against Takeru Segawa in the main event of ONE Championship 165. Originally, the headline bout was expected to feature Rodtang Jitmuangnon against the three-division K-1 world champion. However, Rodtang’s injury forced him to withdraw from the event.
The announcement of the revised main event was made by ONE Championship Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong on his Facebook page, along with a new poster showcasing the clash between Superlek and Takeru. The event is scheduled to take place on January 28 at the Ariake Arena, marking ONE’s highly-anticipated return to Japan.
Superlek, known as ‘The Kicking Machine,’ was initially preparing for a different challenge against Elias Mahmoudi at ONE Fight Night 18 on January 12. However, Mahmoudi’s injury led to the postponement of that bout, and Superlek now seizes the opportunity to face Takeru, a kickboxing icon.
The Thai fighter, aged 28, has had a remarkable year on the ONE Championship stage, including a title defense against Danial Williams with a third-round knockout. Superlek has also ventured into Muay Thai, securing notable wins over Nabil Anane and Tagir Khalilov. Ending 2023 with an impeccable 5-0 record, he notably defeated Rodtang in a historic champion vs. champion clash at ONE Friday Fights 34 in Bangkok.
Takeru Segawa poses a new challenge for Superlek, but the Thai martial artist has consistently demonstrated his prowess in the ring, making him a formidable opponent for any task thrown his way.
This unexpected change in the main event adds an element of surprise and anticipation to ONE Championship 165, as fans eagerly await the clash between Superlek and Takeru, promising an action-packed spectacle in the flyweight kickboxing division.
The event is poised to be a celebration of martial arts excellence, showcasing the resilience and adaptability of fighters like Superlek, who continue to push the boundaries of their capabilities on the global stage of ONE Championship. Stay tuned for an exciting showdown between two accomplished athletes on January 28.
