Rain washes out day one of India-New Zealand first Test

India

Continuous rain has caused further issues for the Wellington team as they postponed their morning training session and had to cancel the first day of the first Test of the India-New Zealand series at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium because of bad weather conditions.

Much to the heartbreak of players and fans, slotted in to action, the officials had to end the day as there was not a single ball bowled due to rain.

The captains as well as umpires conducted a brief twilights pitch inspection, about half an hour prior to the tea break, but rain has made the surface unplayable, this was the instruction from the umpires.

The New Zealand side on the other hand would find it somewhat more challenging, having just concluded their Asian tour where they had been affected by weather as well.

Their last match with Afghanistan also got the rub of rain in Greater Noida during last month, so this can be considered an arduous beginning for their Indian trip.

The ongoing T20 series has been part of the ICC World Test Championship, more T20 matches are coming up in Pune and Mumbai. India must defeat the reigning 2021 Test champions comprehensively, if they are to have a better chance of reaching the finals for the third time in a row next year.

New Zealand enters the match within the absence of their opener batsman Kane Williamson who is missing out due to a groin injury which he acquired while batting during the series loss to Sri Lanka.

Further, pace bowler Ben Sears has been ruled out of the whole series owing to knee injury which reduces the strength of Black Caps.

For New Zealand, it’s a new tenure, having lost their previous captain Tim Southee just a month ago, Tom Latham has now taken the mantle and leads the team.

Latham’s captaincy will now be put to the test and he needs to focus all his attention to help his team after consecutive defeats.

Back to larger sentiments, India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, hopes to further improve his home record.

After winning the two-match series against Bangladesh, India is eyeing its 19th win in a deliberate series at home, which began in 2012. With rain again interfering with play, players and the public continue to hope for sunny days in the next few days.
