Paris Masters Relocates to Paris La Défense Arena

The Paris Masters indoor tennis tournament is set to undergo a significant change as it relocates to a new venue starting next year, announced the French tennis federation on Monday. The event will move from its traditional home at the Bercy Arena to the larger Paris La Défense Arena, resulting in an increased capacity from just under 17,000 to 23,000.

According to the French Tennis Federation (FFT), the decision to relocate comes with several improvements. The new venue will feature larger and better courts compared to the Bercy Arena, where smaller courts faced criticism from players in the previous year. Additionally, scheduling adjustments will be made to address complaints about late finishes.

Jannik Sinner, who clinched his first Grand Slam title by winning the Australian Open on Sunday, notably withdrew from the Paris Masters last November as a form of protest against the scheduling. He criticized organizers for not allowing sufficient time for rest, particularly after a match that concluded close to 3 a.m., leaving him less than 12 hours to recover before the next one. Several other players supported Sinner’s complaint.

In light of these concerns, the current format of four daytime matches and two evening sessions will be altered. The new structure will include three daytime matches and two in the evening, aiming to prevent matches from starting too late.

FFT President Gilles Moretton emphasized the significance of this strategic decision for the Paris Masters. He stated, “By moving to the Paris La Défense Arena, we will fulfill our ambitions by offering our athletes and spectators an experience they will remember.”

The Bercy Arena, also known as the Accor Arena, will host the Paris Masters for the last time from October 28 to November 3. The move to the Paris La Défense Arena is expected to provide an enhanced experience for both players and spectators, addressing past concerns and aligning with the federation’s goals.

This decision marks a pivotal moment for the prestigious tennis tournament, signifying a commitment to improving player conditions, optimizing scheduling logistics, and enhancing the overall atmosphere for fans. The increased capacity and superior facilities at the Paris La Défense Arena aim to elevate the Paris Masters to new heights in the world of indoor tennis events.
