In a crucial match at the ODI World Cup 2023, Pakistan managed to keep their faint hopes of reaching the semifinals alive with a resounding seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh. This contest, held at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata, also confirmed the elimination of Bangladesh from the race for a spot in the tournament’s semifinals. Pakistan’s star batters, Abdullah Shafique and Fakhar Zaman, played pivotal roles in ending their four-match losing streak in the ODI World Cup.
Pakistan had been facing a string of losses and off-field controversies, which had cast doubt over their performance in the tournament. However, they successfully turned the tide with a dominant performance against Bangladesh. After restricting Bangladesh to a modest total of 204 runs, Pakistan’s batters executed a composed chase and achieved the target in just 32.3 overs. This crucial victory propelled Pakistan to six points in the tournament, reigniting their hopes of advancing to the knockout stage.
The opening partnership of Abdullah Shafique and Fakhar Zaman proved to be a game-changer for Pakistan, as they amassed a formidable 128-run stand in just 21 overs. This partnership set the tone for Pakistan’s successful run chase. Unfortunately, Shafique’s brilliant innings of 68 came to an end when he was dismissed by Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who later also claimed the crucial wicket of Pakistan’s skipper, Babar Azam, for just 9 runs.
The middle order then took over the responsibility of guiding Pakistan to victory. Mohammad Rizwan contributed with 26 runs, while Iftikhar Ahmed added 17 runs to the total. Interestingly, all of Bangladesh’s wickets were taken by Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who finished with figures of 60/3 in his nine overs.
On the other side, Bangladesh struggled to put up a competitive total. They were bowled out for 204, with Mahmudullah emerging as the top-scorer with 56 runs, and skipper Shakib Al Hasan contributing 43 runs from 64 balls. Pakistan’s bowlers, Mohammad Wasim Jr and Shaheen Shah Afridi, each claimed three wickets, while Haris Rauf secured two wickets.
Looking ahead, Pakistan’s next match is against New Zealand, where a victory would further boost their chances of reaching the semifinals. This crucial encounter will take place at the same venue, the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Pakistan will also face England in their final league-stage match. Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s remaining matches are against Sri Lanka and Australia, as they try to end their campaign on a high note.
