Pakistan’s spin attack put the visitors in a commanding position on Day 3 of the second and final Test against the West Indies in Trinidad, leaving the hosts reeling at 103 for 6 in their second innings with a lead of just 60 runs.
Abdullah Shafique Anchors Pakistan Innings
Opener Abdullah Shafique produced a superb unbeaten 160, guiding Pakistan to a first-innings total of 387.
His marathon knock lasted more than seven-and-a-half hours, during which he faced 323 balls, striking 15 fours and three sixes. Shafique’s innings ensured Pakistan secured a valuable first-innings lead despite a late collapse.
Pakistan Lose Momentum After Strong Start
Pakistan resumed the day comfortably placed at 266 for 2, appearing set for a massive total.
However, captain Babar Azam’s run-out proved to be the turning point.
After adding just two runs to his overnight score of 86, Babar attempted a risky single before being sent back by Shafique. A direct hit from Brandon King caught him short of his crease, triggering a collapse in which Pakistan lost their final eight wickets for 106 runs.
Jomel Warrican Stars with Six Wickets
West Indies spinner Jomel Warrican was the standout performer with the ball, finishing with impressive figures of 6 for 112.
He wrapped up Pakistan’s innings by claiming three wickets in four deliveries just before tea, leaving Shafique stranded unbeaten at the non-striker’s end.
Fast bowlers Shamar Joseph and Jayden Seales also contributed key breakthroughs during Pakistan’s collapse.
Brandon King Suffers Injury
The run-out of Babar Azam came at a cost for the West Indies.
After completing the direct-hit dismissal, Brandon King remained on the ground in visible pain and was eventually stretchered off the field.
Medical assessments later confirmed that the opener was suffering from back spasms, leaving uncertainty over whether he will be able to bat in the remainder of the match.
Pakistan Spinners Take Control
Pakistan’s spin duo quickly seized control during the West Indies’ second innings.
Sajid Khan claimed four wickets, removing:
- Tagenarine Chanderpaul
- Amir Jangoo
- Shai Hope
- Nightwatchman Jayden Seales
He later celebrated the dismissal of West Indies captain Roston Chase, who was caught and bowled off the final delivery of the day.
Left-arm spinner Ali Usman supported brilliantly with two wickets, including Chase’s crucial dismissal and the earlier wicket of Kavem Hodge.
Greaves Holds West Indies’ Hopes
With wickets falling regularly, Justin Greaves, who top-scored in the first innings, remains unbeaten and will carry the West Indies’ hopes into Day 4.
His side will also be monitoring the fitness of Brandon King before resuming play.
West Indies Need a Strong Fightback
Despite Pakistan’s dominance, West Indies bowling coach Ravi Rampaul believes the hosts still have a chance if they can extend their lead.
He praised Warrican’s performance, saying the left-arm spinner was outstanding in finishing off Pakistan’s innings.
Rampaul added that a target of around 150 runs could still give the West Indies an opportunity to defend on a deteriorating pitch offering sharp turn and uneven bounce.
Pakistan Eye Series-Levelling Victory
Heading into Day 4, Pakistan hold the advantage with their spinners exploiting the increasingly difficult batting conditions.
With the West Indies six wickets down and holding only a narrow lead, Pakistan are well placed to wrap up the innings quickly and chase a manageable target to level the Test series.
