LaLiga has officially introduced a series of new refereeing rules for the 2026-27 season to improve match flow, reduce time-wasting, and ensure more consistent officiating. Several of the changes were successfully tested during the FIFA World Cup 2026 and have now been adopted for Spain’s top-flight football competition.
Aim of the New Rules
The updated regulations are designed to:
- Reduce unnecessary delays during matches.
- Improve consistency in refereeing decisions.
- Increase transparency in the use of VAR.
- Address controversial situations more effectively.
These rule changes are part of broader amendments approved by the International Football Association Board (IFAB).
VAR Gets Expanded Powers
One of the biggest changes is the expanded role of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
VAR will now be allowed to intervene in:
- Second yellow card incidents.
- Cases of mistaken identity involving red cards.
- Incorrectly awarded corner kicks.
This expansion aims to reduce officiating errors that can significantly impact matches.
Faster Player Substitutions
To prevent time-wasting during substitutions:
- Players leaving the field must exit within 10 seconds.
- If they fail to do so, the incoming substitute must wait 60 seconds before entering the pitch.
This rule is expected to discourage deliberate delays late in games.
New Medical Treatment Rules
LaLiga has also introduced stricter regulations regarding injured players.
- Any player receiving treatment on the field must remain off the pitch for at least one minute before returning.
- If a goalkeeper stops play for treatment without being injured through a foul, one of their teammates must also leave the field for one minute.
The objective is to prevent players from using injury stoppages to waste time.
Throw-ins Limited to Five Seconds
Referees will now enforce a strict five-second countdown for throw-ins.
Players taking longer than the allotted time risk losing possession, helping maintain the pace of the game.
Updated Penalty Kick Rule
A clarification has also been introduced for penalty kicks.
If a player accidentally kicks the ball twice while taking a penalty:
- The attempt will be recorded as missed, provided the ball does not enter the goal.
This aligns LaLiga with IFAB’s updated Laws of the Game.
VAR Decisions Announced to Fans
Following the model used at the FIFA World Cup 2026, referees will now announce the outcome of VAR reviews directly to spectators inside the stadium.
The move is intended to improve transparency and help fans better understand key decisions.
