NBA 2019-20: Top 5 Sophomores in the League right now

The top 5 picks in the 2018 NBA Draft were included in the All-Rookie First Team for the very first time ever since the year 1985. Marvin Bagley III, Deandre Ayton, Jaren Jackson Junior, Luka Doncic and Trae Young had impeccable seasons on debut and were perceived as the 5 best sophomores for the 2019-20 NBA season by experts. Yet, post suspension, Ayton has missed out on the season so far and Marvin Bagley III has appeared just one time. This has naturally opened the doors for other athletes in their second year to garb the spotlight.

Top 5 Sophomores in the NBA 2019-20 League

  1. Colin Sexton (Cleveland Cavaliers)- Sexton had an unfortunate miss when it comes to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in the previous season although he has retained his form till now. In 9 appearances so far, Sexton has an 18.7 point average with 3.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists every game. He is shooting almost 40% from the 3-point line for the second year in a row. He has been scoring a minimum of 10 points in every match this season and put up a stellar performance lately when he scored 31 points (career best) against the New York Knicks. Sexton is certainly one of the best point guards amongst young athletes in the NBA at the moment.
  2. Devonte’ Graham (Charlotte Hornets) – Graham spent four years at the University of Kansas and was drafted into the NBA earlier. Yet, he had only 14.7 minutes in 46 appearances in the rookie season due to Kemba Walker’s stellar form. He had an average of 4.7 points and 2.6 assists per game and now he averages 18.0 points with 7.3 assists per game and 31.6 minutes for every game. This 24-year old star could eventually replace Walker in the starting line-up for the Charlotte Hornets.
  3. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Oklahoma City Thunder) – He has spent a fantastic rookie season at Los Angeles Clippers. Yet, the franchise had to keep him in the Paul George trading deal. He is playing well for Oklahoma City till now and has 20.1 points as his average with 5.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists for every game. 3-point shooting has gone up to 41% and if he continues in this vein, he will be one of the NBA’s most promising future superstars as predicted by experts.
  4. Trae Young (Atlanta Hawks) – Young had a 19.1 point average in his first season with an average of 8.1 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game. He has appeared 9 times this season with an average of 4.3 rebounds, 28.0 points and 8.7 assists every game. He is also the youngest NBA player in history to post 10 assists and 30 points at least in 3 games back to back. His 3-point shooting stats are excellent at 40.2% and he should soon become an All-Star with these impressive numbers.
  5. Luka Doncic (Dallas Mavericks) – Doncic won the 2019 NBA Rookie of the Year Award and he has an average of 28.3 points in 10 appearances along with 9.1 assists and 10.3 rebounds for every game. He already has 4 triple-doubles to his name and may be the third NBA player in history to average a triple-double in a season. He has also led the Mavs excellently to a 6-4 standing in spite of a hectic game schedule. Doncic is on his way towards becoming one of the NBA’s best players ever.
