Liverpool piled more pressure on struggling Tottenham Hotspur with a convincing 3-1 victory in the League Cup third round at a rain-soaked Anfield.
Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai were on target for Liverpool as Tottenham suffered another disappointing result following their difficult start to the Premier League season.
Tottenham have failed to win or score in their opening four league matches this season, recording two defeats and two draws. Their only victory so far came in the League Cup against Championship side Charlton Athletic.
Gakpo and Szoboszlai Complete Liverpool Victory
Liverpool opened the scoring through Mac Allister before Gakpo doubled the advantage in the 54th minute with a well-placed strike into the far corner.
Tottenham finally found the net against top-flight opposition this season when Conor Gallagher took advantage of poor marking to score from a corner in the 69th minute.
However, any hopes of a comeback were ended in stoppage time when Szoboszlai fired a spectacular 25-yard effort into the net to seal Liverpool’s 3-1 win.
Max Dowman Stars for Arsenal
At Portman Road, teenage midfielder Max Dowman delivered an impressive performance as Arsenal defeated Ipswich Town 4-2.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta made nine changes to the team that defeated Sunderland on Saturday, giving 16-year-old Dowman his first appearance of the season.
Dowman has attracted attention since making his breakthrough as a 15-year-old last season, although Arteta has continued to introduce him gradually.
Dowman Scores Twice
Dowman made an immediate impact, opening the scoring in the seventh minute. He showed quick footwork to get past Cedric Kipre before calmly finishing.
Noni Madueke added Arsenal’s second in the 16th minute with a low shot from inside the penalty area.
Dowman struck again just two minutes after the restart, running onto a pass from Martin Zubimendi before producing another composed finish.
Mikel Merino completed Arsenal’s scoring in the 58th minute after receiving a pass from Dowman and curling the ball into the net.
Ipswich responded through Anis Mehmeti in the 62nd minute, while Chuba Akpom scored in stoppage time, but Arsenal held on for a 4-2 victory.
Fulham and Brentford Also Progress
Fulham made nine changes to their starting lineup but still secured a 3-2 victory away against Championship leaders West Ham.
Rodrigo Muniz and Cesar Palacios scored for Fulham before Oscar Bobb netted the 78th-minute winner.
Brentford also advanced after beating third-tier Reading 2-1. Callum Wilson and Fabio Carvalho were on target for the Premier League side.
Manchester City Await Norwich
League Cup holders Manchester City will continue their title defence on Thursday when they host Norwich.
