Lionel Messi is having an absurd season and apparently, no one is talking about that. Midweek Champions League action saw Messi inspiring Barcelona to a 2-1 win over PSV Eindhoven with a goal and an assist. But it’s not really headlining as the news as it is not new. We’re very much used to this level. But maybe we should not be so used to it.
Messi has been the man of the match in all the last five matches he has played coming back after injury except the Sevilla match which he went off injured midway through the first half. The Argentine star has also notched at least a goal or an assist in his past 10 games. He also has 10 goals or assists in his previous six matches. But the most interesting fact among these is that Messi is performing exceptionally well even after coming from injury whereas Barcelona is still under par in their performance. Barcelona’s defense has become too much vulnerable this season. They have already conceded 19 goals in La Liga this season.
Recently, Barcelona lost 4-3 to Real Betis in Camp Nou, a match which was marked as the return of Lionel Messi after his injury. This defeat was the Catalans’ first defeat at home since they were beaten 2-1 by Alaves in September 2016 and the first time they have conceded four goals in a league game since they were beaten 4-2 by Deportivo La Coruna in April 2003.
When asked by Marca about his future with Barcelona, The Argentine replied, “My main goal is to keep growing and not to be content with what I’ve done, won or achieved. I want to get better each day and complete more objectives and win more titles. I consider myself very competitive.” He signed off.
