Late Goal Crushes the World Cup Dream of Our Swedish Trio

Amanda Ilestedt looks disappointed following the loss to Spain in the World Cup semi-finals

In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Stina Blackstenius, Amanda Ilestedt, and Lina Hurtig witnessed their aspirations of claiming victory in the 2023 Women’s World Cup shatter as a last-minute surge of goals concluded with Spain prevailing 2-1 in the semi-final.

The match in Auckland remained goalless as it entered the final 10 minutes. However, on the 81st minute, Salma Paralluelo propelled Spain into the lead by driving the ball into the bottom corner. Just six minutes later, Lina, who had just been brought on as a substitute, deftly nodded the ball to Rebecka Blomqvist, another substitute, who found the net, seemingly setting the stage for extra time.

Yet, in a swift turn of events, a mere 93 seconds later, Olga Carmona seized possession from a corner and her shot from the edge of the box brushed the crossbar on its way into the goal, dashing Swedish hopes. This marks the third consecutive edition of the tournament in which Sweden has been eliminated in the final-four stage.

Stina and Amanda commenced the game, with Stina making way for Blomqvist on the 77th minute, while Amanda remained on the field throughout, although she was unable to add to her impressive tally of four goals in the tournament.

This outcome propels Spain to their maiden Women’s World Cup final, where they are set to face the victor of Wednesday’s clash between England and Australia. Consequently, there is an assurance of Arsenal representation in the final, with Alessia Russo, Lotte Wubben-Moy, Caitlin Foord, and Steph Catley all vying for a spot in the showpiece event.

Our Swedish trio will compete for the bronze medal in Saturday’s third-place play-off against the loser of that aforementioned game, aiming to secure recognition for their outstanding performances throughout their time in the tournament.
