On Sunday, Star India batter Virat Kohli wrote a heartfelt message for his former teammate Shikhar Dhawan, who had announced his retirement from both international and domestic cricket the previous day. Kohli’s note celebrated Dhawan’s remarkable career and contributions to the sport, reflecting on their shared memories and the impact Dhawan had on Indian cricket.
Kohli, who formed a famed and fearsome top three with Rohit Sharma and Dhawan in ODI cricket during a better part of 2010s, lauded the left-hander for giving the country “countless memories” ever since his fearless debut to the days of becoming a highly-dependable opener.
The 35-year-old Kohli expressed that Dhawan’s retirement marks the end of an era, highlighting that Dhawan’s passion for the game, exceptional sportsmanship, and his “trademark smile” will be deeply missed. Kohli praised Dhawan’s contributions on and off the field, noting that his positive presence and dedication to cricket made a lasting impact on everyone.
“Shikhar @SDhawan25 from your fearless debut to becoming one of India’s most dependable openers, you’ve given us countless memories to cherish. Your passion for the game, your sportsmanship and your trademark smile will be missed, but your legacy lives on. Thank you for the memories, unforgettable performances and always leading with your heart. Wishing you the best in your next innings, off the field, Gabbar!,” tweeted Kohli.
The Delhi player made his India debut against Australia in 2013 and his last international match was against Bangladesh in December 2022, both 50-overs matches, a format considered his strong suit.
The 38-year-old cricketer expressed in a video on his social media platforms the importance of moving on and welcoming new stages in life. After careful consideration, I have made the decision to step away from playing both international and domestic cricket. This choice symbolizes a fresh start for me, and I’m prepared to discover new chances and obstacles outside of cricket.
“I’ve reminded myself not to feel sad about no longer playing for India, but rather to cherish the joy of having represented the country. It’s about appreciating the incredible opportunity and experiences I’ve had, and finding happiness in having contributed to India’s cricketing legacy.”
Throughout his impressive career, the southpaw scored 24 international centuries, highlighting his remarkable talent and reliability. He excelled in multi-team tournaments, playing a key role in the Champions Trophy, Asia Cup, and the 2015 World Cup. His team relied on his critical performances in these important events, showcasing his skill and dependability in crucial matches.
His 85-ball hundred against Australia in a 2013 test was the fastest by a debutant. Dhawan also captained India in several limited-overs series whenever regular skippers had to be rested.
Former Indian cricket team head coach Ravi Shastri also honored Shikhar Dhawan with a glowing tribute after his retirement. Shastri praised Dhawan’s contributions to Indian cricket, acknowledging his exceptional performances and leadership over the years. His tribute highlighted Dhawan’s impact on the team and his role in shaping Indian cricket’s success.
“Enjoy your retirement, Shiki Boy! You brought me so much joy and entertainment during my 7 years as coach and director. Your match-winning innings in ICC tournaments, Asia Cups, and that unforgettable knock in Galle will always be remembered. You’re still young and have plenty of ways to contribute to the sport. God bless,” Shastri wrote on social media.
He is also the second-highest run-getter of all time in the Indian Premier League (IPL), scoring 6,769 runs in 222 matches at an average of 35.25, with two centuries and 51 fifties.
