North London Rivals Eye Real Sociedad’s Barrenetxea

North London

As the winter transfer window opens in Europe, two North London football giants, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, are reportedly keen on securing the services of Real Sociedad winger Ander Barrenetxea. According to reports from The Sun, both Premier League clubs have been closely monitoring the 22-year-old player, who recently returned to action after a three-week absence due to an ankle injury.

Scouts from Arsenal and Tottenham watched Barrenetxea in action during the Basque Derby against Real Betis, where he played just over an hour in a goalless draw. Arsenal sees him as a top option to provide competition for existing wingers like Gabriel Martinelli. Manager Mikel Arteta, who spent a season with Real Sociedad in the 2004-05 season, maintains a positive relationship with the club. On the other hand, Tottenham’s manager, Ange Postecoglou, is eager to bolster his injury-hit front line and reportedly sees similarities between Barrenetxea and Jota from his time at Celtic.

Both clubs value Barrenetxea’s versatility, as he is capable of playing on both wings as well as centrally. The Spanish winger has featured in 22 matches across all competitions this season, contributing with four goals and two assists.

The interest in Barrenetxea is not only limited to the North London rivals, as several other clubs are making moves in the transfer market:

  1. Barcelona Eyeing Lingard: Reports from Mundo Deportivo suggest that Barcelona is interested in signing attacking midfielder Jesse Lingard. The 31-year-old has been a free agent since his contract with Nottingham Forest expired in the summer. Lingard, tempted by a potential move to MLS, still desires to play at the highest level in European football. Barcelona had previously shown interest in Lingard but opted for Ferran Torres instead.
  2. Newcastle’s Interest in Kimmich: Newcastle United has reportedly inquired about the possibility of signing Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich. However, the 28-year-old is not interested in a winter transfer, and his future remains open for negotiations in the summer, with his contract ending in 2025.
  3. Bayern Munich’s Defensive Pursuits: Bayern Munich is looking to strengthen its defense and is reportedly competing with Manchester United for the signing of Nice center-back Jean-Clair Todibo. Additionally, Bayern is exploring a move for Lens’ Kevin Danso, although the 25-year-old is considered too expensive for Paris Saint-Germain during the January transfer window.
  4. Tottenham’s Interest in Itakura: Tottenham Hotspur is keen on Borussia Monchengladbach center-back Ko Itakura. The 26-year-old’s release clause in the summer is expected to be between €10 million and €15 million, and the Bundesliga club is looking to extend his contract.
  5. Doig’s Potential Move to Sassuolo: Hellas Verona left-back Josh Doig might be on his way to Sassuolo, according to Sky Sports Italia. Despite previous reports suggesting a move to Olympique de Marseille, the 21-year-old Scottish defender is open to a move to Sassuolo, with the deal rumored to be worth €6 million plus add-ons.

As the transfer window unfolds, these potential moves and negotiations highlight the dynamic nature of football clubs seeking to strengthen their squads for the remainder of the season.
