Ending his decade-long association with the Sydney Sixers. Lyon, a prominent Test star, will team up with Australia’s premier white-ball spinner, Adam Zampa, in the Renegades’ squad.
Having been part of the title-winning Sydney Sixers in the 2019-20 season, Lyon is now seeking fresh opportunities with the Renegades and will remain with the club until the conclusion of the 2025-26 season. With Lyon on board, the Melbourne Renegades boast one of the most experienced squads in the Big Bash, featuring players like Aaron Finch, Shaun Marsh, Kane Richardson, and captain Nic Maddinson.
Throughout his BBL career, which began with the Adelaide Strikers in the league’s inaugural season, Lyon has amassed 44 wickets from 38 matches, with an impressive average of 21.50 and an economical economy rate of 7.18. He is one of only three Sixers players, alongside Sean Abbott and Ben Dwarshuis, to have achieved a five-wicket haul in the competition.
The Melbourne Renegades showed signs of improvement in the previous BBL|12 season, finishing third after three consecutive wooden spoons. Despite being eliminated in the playoffs by the Brisbane Heat, the Renegades’ resurgence excites Lyon, who is eager to contribute to their future success.
Lyon expressed his excitement about joining the Melbourne Renegades, citing Marvel Stadium as a venue he enjoys bowling in, given its tendency to offer spin. He also looks forward to forming a strong partnership with Adam Zampa and putting up a show for the Renegades’ loyal fans. Additionally, Lyon mentioned that his decision to move was influenced by the presence of good friends within the Renegades’ ranks and the powerful combination of senior and younger players in the squad.
Currently recovering from a calf injury that interrupted his Ashes campaign at Lord’s, where he played his 100th consecutive Test match for Australia, Lyon remains enthusiastic about the fresh challenge that awaits him with the Melbourne Renegades.
