India head coach Gautam Gambhir has shared an update on Hardik Pandya’s potential return to international cricket while highlighting Nitish Kumar Reddy’s growing importance in the ODI setup.
With India preparing for major upcoming tournaments, the team management is focusing on developing reliable seam-bowling all-rounders.
Gambhir explained that Pandya needs more match practice before making his international comeback, while Nitish is expected to benefit from additional opportunities in the ODI format.
Hardik Pandya Must Regain Match Fitness
Hardik Pandya has been dealing with fitness concerns and has not played enough cricket since the IPL.
According to Gambhir, the all-rounder is currently not ready to bowl 10 overs in an ODI match, making a careful return plan important.
The India head coach explained that Pandya should gain valuable match experience through the India A series against Australia A. This period will allow the player and team management to assess his fitness before considering a return to international cricket.
India A Series Could Open the Door for Hardik’s Return
Gambhir indicated that a successful India A campaign could help Pandya return to both the T20I and ODI squads. However, the coaching staff does not want to rush him into international cricket without sufficient preparation.
International matches demand high levels of fitness, particularly from all-rounders expected to contribute with both bat and ball. Pandya’s progress in the upcoming games will therefore be important for his comeback plans.
Nitish Kumar Reddy Receives ODI Opportunity
While Pandya works toward regaining his fitness, Nitish Kumar Reddy is receiving greater attention in India’s ODI plans. The young seam-bowling all-rounder was moved from the Asian Games squad to the ODI squad for the upcoming West Indies series.
Gambhir believes the additional playing opportunity will help Nitish develop his skills and gain valuable experience in the longer white-ball format.
India Could Use Both All-Rounders Together
Gambhir also suggested that India could potentially include both Hardik Pandya and Nitish Kumar Reddy in the same playing XI. Having two seam-bowling all-rounders could provide the team with greater flexibility in batting and bowling combinations.
However, Pandya’s current bowling workload remains a consideration. Nitish’s continued development could give India another option as the team builds its squad for future international assignments.
Focus on the 2027 ODI World Cup
Developing seam-bowling all-rounders is becoming an important part of India’s preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Players who can contribute in both departments offer additional balance to the team.
For now, Pandya’s return will depend on his fitness and match preparation, while Nitish will have the opportunity to strengthen his position through ODI cricket.
India’s management appears focused on giving both players the right opportunities without placing unnecessary pressure on their physical readiness.
