Coco Gauff’s former coach, Pere Riba, recently shared insights into their brief collaboration and subsequent split, shedding light on the reasons behind their parting ways. Riba, a former Spanish tennis player, joined Gauff’s coaching team in June 2023 and played a pivotal role in her successful grasscourt campaign. The partnership led to significant victories, including titles at the WTA 500 Citi Open, WTA 1000 Cincinnati Open, and the US Open.

However, the unexpected termination of their collaboration during the 2023 WTA Finals surprised the tennis world. Coco Gauff clarified that the decision was not hers. Pere Riba, appearing on the Functional Tennis Podcast, explained that family issues were the primary reason for their split.

Riba expressed that everything was perfect during their time together, emphasizing that personal matters required his immediate attention. He stated, “Everything was perfect. The situation was that I had some issues in my family. And you know, in that moment, my family needed me. I had to come back. And then, you know, was personal things.” The Spanish coach highlighted the difficulty of the situation and mentioned that both of them tried to find a solution. However, certain circumstances were beyond their control.

Despite the abrupt ending, Riba conveyed that their collaboration was positive, marked by good results and improvement in Gauff’s game. He affirmed, “But everything was perfect; I enjoyed it a lot. Good results; good improvement. I only can [say] positive things.”

Following the split with Gauff, Pere Riba took some time off to focus on his personal life. He mentioned, “Right now, I am quiet; enjoying life. Let’s see what is going on,” indicating that he plans to return to coaching but without rushing into a new role. Riba expressed happiness at having the opportunity to address personal matters and spend time with his family.

Remarkably, Pere Riba swiftly resumed coaching duties, announcing on December 3 that he had renewed his partnership with Zheng Qinwen, his previous charge. Zheng, based in Spain, had previously been coached by Riba for two years until their separation in June 2023. The Spanish coach’s quick return to coaching reflects his commitment to the profession.

In the podcast, Riba discussed his plans for the future, stating, “I’m gonna be back. At least I am happy because now I can fix the things and spend time with my family. And let’s see what is next. You know, no rush.”

The article highlights the sudden but amicable nature of Coco Gauff and Pere Riba’s split, emphasizing the challenges coaches may face due to personal and family considerations in the dynamic world of professional tennis.
