World’s Current Top 20 Richest Football Club

Barcelona has overtaken Real Madrid as the richest football club in the world after generating more money than any other club in the last season. Barça earned a whopping £741.1 million in revenue for the 2018-19 season – a considerable increase on the £611.6 million generated during the 2017-18 campaign. Barcelona’s rise to the top of the rich list came as they won the Spanish title for an eighth time in 11 years and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League. Meanwhile, Juventus re-entered the top 10 of Deloitte’s ranking on the back of signing Cristiano Ronaldo. He has helped the club achieve commercial growth through greater brand visibility and improved merchandise sales

Real Madrid’s revenue, on the other hand, increased by just £2.3 million. Meanwhile, Manchester United remains the Premier League’s richest club although Manchester City and Liverpool are threatening to take the tag away from the Red Devils. 

Meanwhile, here is a look at the top 20 clubs after the last season according to the latest BBC Report. Italy have four teams in the top 20, with Inter Milan, Roma and Napoli also present, Spain and Germany have three apiece, and France two.

20. Napoli

2018/19 revenue: £182.8m

2017/18 revenue: £161.9m

The Italian club is a new entrant in the Top 20 club with them having finished second in the Serie A last season, only 11 points behind champions Juventus. The successful campaign increased their revenue by over £20 million compared to the previous campaign. 

19. Everton

2018/19 revenue: £187.7m

Everton finished their 2018-19 EPL season on the eighth position winning 15 and losing 14 out of the 38 matches they played in total. They did not have a campaign as they exected last season and as per the Deloitte Football Money League, their bad season was the reason behind they increasing their revenue only by £1 million.

18. West Ham

2018/19 revenue: £190.7m

2017/18 revenue: £175.3m

West Ham finished even lower than Everton in the last EPL season winning 15 and losing 16 games in the season. However, despite finishing 10 in the table, their earnings have seen a boost by £15 million last season. They rank 18th as per the BBC report among the current top 10 richest football clubs in the world.

17. Lyon

2018/19 revenue: £194.6m

2017/18 revenue: £145.5m

The French club Lyon finished third on the points table on both the seasons and in the meantime has done some good business which saw them earn almost £50 million helping them make an entry into the current top 20 richest football clubs in the world. They finished third on the points table winning 21 out of the 38 matches played winning four of their last five matches.

16. AS Roma

2018/19 revenue: £203.6m

2017/18 revenue: £221.5m

Roma has seen a drop in the rankings to one place to 16th after finishing sixth on the points table losing as many as 12 games of the 38 matches played. They incurred a loss of nearly 19 million pounds after e mediocre season.

15. Schalke

2018/19 revenue: £286.3m

Schalke, despite a poor 2018-19 Bundesliga campaign, have moved up one place in the Money League after boosting their revenue by an impressive £70 million. Despite doing a good business, they failed to replicate that in their performance. They won just eight games and lost as many as 18 with just 33 points in the bag.

14. Inter Milan

2018/19 revenue: £321.3m

2017/18 revenue: £248.7m

Milan did a successful business in the last season making a profit by 73 percent from £248 million to £321 million. They finished fourth on the points table with 69 points winning 20 games and drawing and losing nine each. 

13. Atletico Madrid

2018/19 revenue: £324m

2017/18 revenue: £269.6m

Athletico Madrid also hold on to their position in the Football Money League table by Deloitte. They finished second in the bygone season with 22 wins and 76 points. They lost six matches and drew 10 and were only 11 points short of champions Barcelona for the season.

12. Borussia Dortmund

2018/19 revenue: £332.4m

2017/18 revenue: £281m

The German club also hold onto their 12th position after the end of the season Football Money League table by Deloitte and according to the BBC report. Dortmund finished second in the season with 76 points from 23 wins, just two points short of champions Bayern Munich.

11. Arsenal

The Gunners have had a tough last year both in terms of business and in the league. Their business increased by just £3 million in the last season after they finished fifth in the points table in the 2018-19 season. They won 21 games and lost just seven in the meantime to finish as 11th on the current top 20 richest football clubs in the world.

10. Juventus

Portugal skipper Cristiano Ronaldo has had a big role to play in the potent rise in the business strategies of the club. The last season saw the Italian champions do business which increased their revenue by over £50 million when they finished as the champions as well. The Ronaldo-effect was very visible in the club’s rise which ranks 10th among the current top 20 richest football clubs in the world. 

9. Chelsea

2018/19 revenue: £452.2m

2017/18 revenue: £448m

The EPL club dropped a place below to ninth according to the BBC and the Football Money League report. They finished the season on 72 points with 21 wins, 8 losses and nine drawn games. They did a business of just £4 million in the meantime. 

8. Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs made a huge business last season when it raised from £459.3m in the 2018/19 season from £379.4m in the 2017/18 season. The club finished fourth with 71 points and their manager Mauricio Pochettino getting sacked earlier this season. Jose Mourinho is now the new Tottenham Hotspurs boss. Their revenue increased by as many as 80 million pounds in the meantime. 

7. Liverpool

2018/19 revenue: £533m

2017/18 revenue: £455.1m

Liverpool remain in the seventh position despite winning the Champions League in the 2018-19 season. Their earning took a hit by 78 million pounds and they finished second in the Premier League as well. 

6. Manchester City

2018/19 revenue: £538.2m

Despite winning the championship in the last season, City stay on the sixth position among the current top 20 richest football clubs in the world. The Club finished two short of 100 points in the EPL and their revenue increased by 35 million pounds. 

5. Paris Saint-Germain

The Ligue 1 champions had a revenue of 81 million pounds between the two seasons. However, they struggled in the Champions League and now moves upto the fifth position among the top 20 richest football clubs in the world. PSG finished with 91 points and 29wins out 38 matches played. 

4. Bayern Munich

2017/18 revenue: £557.4m

The Bundesliga champions are fourth among the top 20 richest football clubs in the world at the moment. In the last season, their revenue increased by 24 million pounds. They also remain the richest club in their league. They ended the campaign with 24 wins and 78 points. 

3. Manchester United

The EPL giants did a good business despite not having the season of their standards. The returns increased by 29 million pounds despite fans criticising the club for their lackluster performance in the season. They are still the third richest club in the world at the moment and have once again proved the might worth of their club despite the number of fans lessening in the meantime. They won 19 games out of the 38 played with nine losses and 10 draws.

2. Real Madrid

Despite only £2 million increase in the business last season, Real Madrid is the second most richest club in the world at the moment. One other way to look at it is, how the margin has decreased after Ronaldo’s exit from the club. They finished third in the points table last season with 21 wins from 38 games aggregating 68 points in total. 

1. Barcelona

With a business of 130 million pounds in the meantime, Barcelona tops the list of the richest football clubs in the world at the moment. Messi has weaved his magic in the meantime by winning the league and also another Ballon d’Or. Almost 90percent of the credit goes to the Argentinian maestro.
