Reports: Thibaut Courtois warns Chelsea

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has warned Chelsea to sell him now or see him leave for free next year, according to a report from The Sun. The Blues want the shotstopper to sign a new deal that would keep him in the club for a long time, but the Belgian has declined the offer from the Stamford Bridge outfit in order to make a move with Real Madrid circling around him.

The former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper was in fine form at the World Cup in Russia and was awarded the Golden Glove award for his efforts. Since then, Real Madrid have been heavily linked with the player whose contract ends next year.

However, Chelsea want to keep him and are trying to persuade him to stay, but to no avail, as the 26-year-old seems to have made up his mind. This leaves Chelsea with only about 8 days to decide whether or not they would let him go for free next summer or cash in and earn £35 million from his sale now.

While Courtois does have a professional reason to leave Chelsea due to the club’s failure to secure Champions League football for the upcoming season, the main reason for his unwavering desire to move to Spain is to be closer to his family.

As a result, he is desperate to move back to Spain as quickly as possible and the worst-case scenario for him will be to wait for another year before becoming a free agent and then leaving the club to move to La Liga.

Chelsea, meanwhile, do not wish to spend any more than £20 million for a new goalkeeper, which leaves them in a bit of a quandary given that the players they have targeted as a potential replacement for the Belgian – Kasper Schmeichel and Jack Butland – will cost more than what they intend to pay.
