EPL 2019-20: Most Overpaid Players This Season

Club football has a lot of money. Be it the English Premier League, La Liga or the Bundesliga, there is a lot of money in this sport. However, there is still parity in payments in the leagues around the world as well. While some players earn more than they deserve, some are paid less despite churning out the best performance for their clubs. From the data available from Spotrac, we at Sportsmonks have tried to enlist 20 most overpaid players for the EPL 2019-2020 season. 

We’ve taken into account the actual wage as well as the contribution they’ve made in the Premier League this campaign.

20 | Bernard – £120,000-per-week

The Everton winger has played 12 games this season and has spent only 35 minutes in the pitch. In the meantime, he has scored three goals and has just one assist to show for. He has been in the starting XI just 38 % which proves that he is certainly not the coach’s favorite. He joined the club on August 9, 2018, and till 30th June 2022 is on a four-year contract. 

19 | Fred – £120,000-per-week

Having joined Manchester United in July 2018, Fred is on a five-year deal with the club till 2023. However, in as many as 17 games this season Fred has not scored any goal and has neither assisted in any. He was a part of the starting XI 67 % of United’s matches and spent a total of 70 minutes on the field. He was booked four times in the meantime.

18 | Andriy Yarmolenko – £115,000-per-week

The West Ham-United Right Winger played 15 games this season scoring three goals and one assist. He was a part of the starting XI 45 % having played a total of 46 minutes on the pitch. Where he fell short was his goal participation percentage which reads 16. He joined the club in July 2018 and is signed with The Hammers till June 2022. 

17 | Andreas Christensen – £80,000-per-week

The Chelsea player has played just eight games for the club this season and his participation in goal is zero. He was on the pitch for just 36 minutes throughout the season and made the starting line-up just 38%. He was roped in by the club in July 2015 and will stay with the club till June 2022.

16 | Morgan Schneiderlin – £100,000-per-week

The Everton midfielder played 11 games for the club this season without a single goal or assist. He was yellow-carded four times in the meantime and his goal participation read zero percent. He made the starting XI 43% and spent 39 minutes on the pitch. Having signed by Everton in 2017, Morgan’s contract ends in 2021.

15 | Juan Mata – £160,000-per-week

United’s Spaniard signing Mata played only 12 games without a single goal or assist. Generally an attacking midfielder, Mata has had a season to forget by his standards. He just played 23 minutes throughout the season having made the starting XI a mere 24%. His goal participation reads zero percent which is very unlike the World Cup-winning Spaniard. Having joined United in 2014, Mata’s contract ends in 2021. 

14 | Tanguy Ndombele – £200,000-per-week

The Spurs central midfielder has played as many as 15 games for the season scoring just two goals and one assist. He was yellow-carded twice during his 42% stay on the pitch throughout the season. He made the starting XI 48 percent while his goal participation reads just 8%. His contract with the club ends in 2025 having joined Spurs in the summer transfer of 2019. 

13 | Nemanja Matic – £120,000-per-week

It was a really bad season for Matic as he hardly made the playing XI. He spent just 19 minutes on the pitch and made the starting XI less than even 20% throughout the season. Having joined United on a three-year deal in 2017, Matic’s contract ends in June 2020. His goal participation in the meantime read zero percent in the five games he played. 

12 | Jesse Lingard – £75,000-per-week

United’s exciting prospect Jesse Lingard, did not have the best of seasons in the EPL. The England player played 18 games for his club this season going goalless while being booked thrice. He made the starting XI nearly 50% and spent nearly fifty minutes on the pitch. He joined the Red Devils back in 2012 and will play until 2021. Remaining goalless for the season meant that his goal participation read zero percent. 

11 | Jack Wilshere – £100,000-per-week

The England player played just six games for West Ham United this season and spent a total of just 175 minutes on the pitch remaining goalless. He also made the starting XI for just 10 percent throughout the season. His goal participation read zero percent. Having joined the club in 2018 his contract ends in 2021. 

10 | Mesut Ozil – £268,750-per-week

Once Arsenal’s blue-eyed boy, Ozil has remained goalless in 11 matches this season. Having being in the starting line-up 52 percent and starting XI goals for the Gunners, Ozil had just one assist to show for. He was on the pitch for 48 minutes while his goal participation was a mere 3 percent. 

9 | Luke Shaw – £120,000-per-week

The United player played 11 games for the club in the season so far and has picked up two yellow cards. He neither had a goal nor an assist to show for his stint so far. He played for just 36 minutes throughout the season and made the starting XI just 38%. His goal participation read zero percent in the meantime. Shaw joined the club in 2014 and his contract expires in 2023 June.

8 | Mamadou Sakho – £100,000-per-week

The French player has had an ordinary season for Crystal Palace. He has started in eight matches for his team this season and was red-carded once. He played for 25 minutes and has made the starting line-up 29%. He joined Palace in August 2017 and will stay with them until June 2021. His goal participation in the meantime read zero percent. 

7 | Marcos Rojo – £80,000-per-week

Rojo remained on the sidelines for most of the season having played just three games and taking the field for just over six minutes in the meantime. He made the starting XI for just 5 percent of United’s matches. Having joined United in August 2014, his contract is valid till June 2021.

6 | Shkodran Mustafi – £90,000-per-week

Arsenal’s Mustafi was benched for most of the season by the Gunners. He played just three matches and spent even less than nine minutes on the pitch. He started just once during the 2-2 draw with Norwich. His goal participation reads zero percent and his five year-contract will expire on June 2021.

5 | Paul Pogba – £290,000-per-week

Pogba is one of the best players in the United ranks yet he played just seven games for the side this season. Though he failed to score goals during his outing, he was successful in providing two assists. He made the starting XI 24 percent as he spent just 28 minutes on the pitch. After an ordinary season, there are talks of him being released by United. He was also plagued by multiple injuries this season.

4 | Max Meyer – £125,000-per-week

Max has played nine games for Crystal Palace this season with no return for his side. He was a part of the starting XI for 24% of Palace’s season. In that, he spent 25 minutes on the pitch. A goalless season means that Max’s goal participation also read zero percent. He joined the club on August 2018 and continues till June 2021. 

3 | Nathaniel Clyne – £70,000-per-week

The right-back has struggled massively with injuries but he hasn’t played in the league since 29 December 2018 – when he came on for seven minutes during his side’s 5-1 victory over Arsenal.

2 | Phil Jones – £75,000-per-week

He played for just one game for United this season when he was in the pitch for 45 minutes in the 3-3 draw against Sheffield United. Barring this one match, he was sidelined for the season throughout.

1 | Christian Benteke – £120,000-per-week

The Crystal Palace striker has had a goalless season in 15 games for his club. He was yellow-carded twice in the meantime and made the starting XI mere 19 percent of Palace’s entire season. Having joined Palace in 2016, he will stay with the club till June 2021.
