Arsenal close to acquiring Dortmund star – Reports

It is no secret that Arsenal need better defenders to strengthen their backline and, as a result, have targeted Borussia Dortmund’s almost-impossibly-spelled Sokratis Papastathapoulos, says a report from Bild.

The Greek defender has just a little over a year left in his contract and could very well be on his way to Arsenal in the summer after Arsene Wenger leaves the club. While the next manager hasn’t been decided yet, Bild add that Arsenal are on the driving seat for the Dortmund star, who is being chased by a multitude of clubs.

The report continues to state that the Gunners’ head of recruitment Sven Mislintat is the man responsible for pushing the experienced center-half and is apparently in close contact with the player’s agent, Konstantinos Farras.

Mislintat’s goal for the summer is to bring in three new faces at the club with one of them being a goalkeeper and the other two being a center-back and a central midfielder.

The fee that would be required to sign the Greek international could be around €20 million – which, considering how the market has inflated in the last two windows, is a great price for a player of Sokratis’ caliber.

Meanwhile, the Gunners have also received a boost in their pursuit of Max Meyer. The German youngster is set to leave Schalke on a free in the summer as his contract expires after the curtains are drawn on the season.

Despite being awarded with big-money contracts, Meyer has refused to commit to Schalke and will be seen playing for a new club next season.
