England defeat co-hosts Mexico 3-2 to reach World Cup quarter-finals

England booked their place in the World Cup quarter-finals with a 3-2 win over outstanding hosts Mexico on Sunday, ending a home tournament best for the co-hosts in 40 years despite competing with 10 men for much of the second half at the Azteca Stadium.

Two for Jude Bellingham and one for Harry Kane from the penalty spot saw England hold on grimly to ensure a famous win that sets up a quarter-final with Norway.

Harry Kane scored a late double as England came from behind to deny the Democratic Republic of Congo a stunning World Cup shock with a 2-1 win in Atlanta that booked their place in the last 16 early on July 1.

But Thomas Tuchel’s men survived their own embarrassment, and one of England’s worst ever World Cup exits to break a 60-year tournament win drought as they went though to the quarter-finals with talismanic captain Harry Kane levelling for them in the wake of Brian Cipenga handing Congo an early lead.
