IPL 2020: 5 Overseas Sold Players who might not get a chance in Playing XI

From the past few weeks Indian Premier League (IPL) is in the news, with the players auction. The IPL Auction 2020 held in Kolkata for the very first time on 19th December 2019. This year auction is a small one, unlike the big auction we saw last year. This year players auction was full of surprises because we already know that there are several big players that will go under the hammer like: Glenn Maxwell, Robin Uthappa, Aaron Finch, Martin Guptil and Shimron Hetmyer and we also expected to high bids on these players. As per team combination IPL franchises spent huge amounts on players like Pat Cummins, Glenn Maxwell, Sheldon Cottrell Piyush Chawla and Kane Richardson. On the other hand, some of the big fishes such as Martin Guptil, Tim Southee, Yusuf Pathan, Carlos Brathwaite, Evin Lewis and Ben Cutting remained unsold.

Some potential players such as Sumit Kumar and Rohan Kadam were not sold in the auction, much to the dismay of these young domestic up-and-comers. However, the grass was greener on the other side as Priyam Garg and Yashashvi Jaiswal were at the end of some hefty paychecks. This day, Kolkata and the rest of India did see an inspiring story unfold with Pravin Tambe being roped in at the age of 48.

However, this auction saw the inclusion of some International cricketers who may not be a part of the grand scheme of things.

Players of IPL 2020 Who Might not Get a Chance in Playing XI

Kane Richardson (Australia)

INR 4 Crore was not a price that Kane Richardson expected his price to be in this edition of the IPL. It is because his recent form has not been worth talking about, and as a result, there is a minimal chance for him to be featured in the starting XI. Aaron Finch, AB de Villiers, and Chris Morris are going to be in the top 3 positions on their priority list. The other vacancy would be a difficult fight between Isuru Udana and Dale Steyn, considering their recent form. So, despite being roped in with a colossal amount, it would be hard for him to be featured in this role.

On the brighter side of things, as Steyn is injury-prone, he can keep his fingers crossed to be featured in some matches in this edition.

Mitchell Marsh (Australia)

Shakib Al Hasan was let go by the Sunrisers Hyderabad due to the imposition of a ban by the ICC. It made a huge gap in the all-rounder department for them. And, as a result, they roped in two all-rounders, Fabian Allen and Mitchell Marsh. Although they already have Mohammed Nabi on the domestic quota, his first-XI position is not something of surety. With David Warner being a mainstay in the starting XI, Kane Williamson and Jonny Bairstow are two other foreigners in this category. Rashid Khan is also here to stay in the team. So, the other four foreigners would face difficulty in finding a place in the starting XI. With these four foreigners in hand, the chances of Mitchell Marsh starting in the top XI would be the thinnest.

Billy Stanlake is the first substitute that they are keeping in hand if Rashid Khan or Jonny Bairstow is not performing up to the expected standards. Rather than preferring Marsh, they would instead use Mohammed Nabi.

Jason Roy (England)

If any cricket fan says that Jason Roy is an unnecessary inclusion to the Delhi Capitals, they would not be wrong. In the entire IPL, this franchise has the most explosive batting line-up. The top 3 entries in the International quota are up for grabs, and anyone can be a part of it. In addition to that, there are several new brilliant recruitments such as Marcus Stoinis, Alex Carey, and Shimron Hetmyer.

It becomes quite impossible to see Jason Roy in the starting XI. Not, unless, they intend to place a top-order first-choice international batsman at the expense of a middle-order international. However, even with this no-brainer, there can be some logic that may fit the action. The Delhi Capitals can use him as a backup option. He possesses the talent that every franchise in this tournament would love to have.

Nathan Coulter-Nile (Australia)

Even after a quality bowling line-up that features the likes of Trent Boult, Lasith Malinga, and Mitchell McCleneghan, it is a no-brainer seeing him on this side. There is no need to make him a part of this side with such a fierce pace-attack at their disposal. But, with his inclusion, it would, no doubt, enhance their bench strength manifold.

However, there are several factors due to which the featuring of Coulter Nile would be almost impossible. The only way he can start in the line-up is only through an injury or if the team management decides to play with the line-up a bit. It is quite apparent that Chris Lynn and Quinton de Kock would go head-to-head to find a spot in the starting XI. Coulter Nile, at best, would be a third choice International seamer, and so, his first XI chances are bleak at best.

Chris Green (Australia)

With his talent, Chris Green has turned many heads and, as a result, has attracted quite a bid. The blood of the youth running in his veins can be a difference-maker for any side. Although KKR was able to rope him in at his base price, it is highly unlikely he would be a top contender in the starting XI.

Green is now a part of a team that already has sure-shot starters like Sunil Narine, Lockie Ferguson, and Harry Gurney. Along with these are some big-money signings like Andre Russell and Pat Cummings.

However, despite all these negative factors for him, it may be a steep learning curve for the Aussie youngster. With the performances he is giving for Sydney Thunder in the KFC Big-Bash, he may give these prolific performers a run for their money in the IPL.
