Chelsea’s Premier League run continues, as they moved closer to league leaders Liverpool after a battle-hardened 2-1 win over Brentford on Sunday. Marc Cucurella and Nicolas Jackson scores gave Chelsea the points and now Chelsea are just two points off the top.
The Blues held possession at the start and pushed Brentford back inside their own half. Chelsea created a few chances but they didn’t strike back until the 43rd minute. Spanish fullback Marc Cucurella run great into the box and heads in Noni Madueke’s direct cross, squeezing past Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken for the hosts to go ahead just before the break.
He kept the attacking momentum going in the second half with Enzo Fernandez running the midfield. The adversity paid off in the 80th minute as Fernandez’s ecliptic pass went to Nicolas Jackson. The fit striker had showed his finish sleight of hand, pushing the ball into the near post for his ninth Premier League goal of the campaign.
But Brentford – counter-attacking masters – would not be done. Bryan Mbeumo, who looked like he could score all game, took advantage of a late turnover to make it 1-1 in the 90th minute and ensured a tight finish for the crowd at Stamford Bridge.
Even in this nerve-wracking climax, Chelsea were not out of it and they are now four points clear of third-placed Arsenal. They will be buoyed by the win, as they try to hold Liverpool at bay.
