Australia’s Short aims to fill Warner’s slot

Short missed the Scotland series for the birth of his first child but was pleased to be able to come in and play against England.

No sooner than that happened, many observers tipped Fraser-McGurk for the role of the opener, even more so after Warner captioned a picture with him and the young opener stating; ‘All yours now champion’ after hanging out his boots last June.

Nevertheless, they resulted in Fraser-McGurk’s performance where he managed to sandy a 16 causing two ducks in a three-match series against the Scots.

Short was left out of the Australia side for the T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies, and the match at Southampton was Short’s first T20I since February.

He maintained that he was determined to earn himself regular inclusion into the Australia playing eleven.

“It’s a personal sort of goal of mine. I have been on the side in the recent 12-18 months and I have been out of it; in and out,” the batter evolved in Ballarat stated.

“Now that Dave is out, I am putting a lot of effort into this and attempt to make myself a member of this team.”

The shock retirement of Warner also left a gap in the test side and therefore smith was given the role unsuccessfully during the home summer series against the West Indies and in the tour to New Zealand.

w McDonald has stated that selectors were still in two minds whether it was in the team’s interest to persist with Smith opening in the upcoming five-Test series against India at home during the summer.
