Mizoram batter Chinmay Sutar produced a remarkable performance against Nagaland in the 2026–27 Ranji Trophy, scoring an unbeaten 400 runs in the Plate Group contest.
The 29-year-old reached the milestone in just his second first-class match, delivering one of the most memorable innings in Indian domestic cricket.
His marathon effort helped Mizoram declare their first innings at 581 for nine.
Sutar’s achievement also placed him among a select group of batters who have reached the 400-run mark in first-class cricket.
Chinmay Sutar Reaches 400 With 46 Fours and Seven Sixes
Sutar faced 517 deliveries during his extraordinary innings, striking 46 fours and seven sixes against Nagaland.
He anchored the batting effort even as wickets fell at the other end, contributing the majority of Mizoram’s total.
Jehu Anderson provided valuable support with 69 runs, while the final-wicket partnership with Lalrempuia Chhakchhuak helped Sutar complete the historic milestone.
Chhakchhuak remained unbeaten on 14 as Mizoram finished their innings on a commanding total.
Second-Highest Individual Score in Ranji Trophy History
With his unbeaten 400, Sutar became only the second batter in Ranji Trophy history to score a quadruple century.
The record for the highest individual innings still belongs to Bhausaheb Nimbalkar, who made 443 not out for Maharashtra against Kathiawar during the 1948–49 season.
Sutar moved past Prithvi Shaw’s 379 for Mumbai against Assam in 2023, taking second place on the tournament’s all-time individual scoring list.
His performance ended a wait of nearly 78 years for another Ranji Trophy batter to reach 400.
From Mumbai to Mizoram: A Career-Defining Achievement
Born in Mumbai, Sutar joined Mizoram ahead of the current domestic season after previously representing Mumbai in List A cricket.
He had made an encouraging start to his first-class career earlier in the season, scoring 99 in the second innings against Manipur.
His latest innings has brought him wider recognition and established a major milestone early in his red-ball career.
By joining an elite list of first-class batters, Sutar has delivered a performance that could become a defining moment in his cricketing journey.
