Having surpassed 5,000 Test runs, he now stands just seven runs away from becoming the oldest Australian since Sir Donald Bradman to score 500 runs in an Ashes series.
Currently unbeaten on 69, Khawaja has emerged as the leading run-scorer in the series, overtaking England’s Zac Crawley (480). At 36 years old, he needs 16 more runs to surpass Bradman’s tally of 508 runs in the legendary Invincibles tour of the UK in 1948.
Khawaja’s resurgence in Test cricket has been remarkable. After being dropped from the side during the 2019 Ashes, he considered his Test career to be over, having scored 2,887 runs from 44 Tests at that point. However, his recall in 2022 marked a late-career revival, amassing 2,114 runs at an impressive average of 62.17 from 22 Tests, with seven centuries – all achieved after turning 35.
Acknowledging the challenges of batting in England, Khawaja remains grounded and focused. He considers England the toughest place for a top-order batsman and advises going into the tour with low expectations and taking it one game at a time.
As Khawaja approaches yet another milestone, the cricketing world awaits to witness if he can etch his name alongside the great Sir Donald Bradman in the history books
