World Cup 2026 Off to a Thrilling Start with Unexpected Results

Five games in and the 2026 World Cup has already produced more chaos than most people expected.

Brazil dropped points to Morocco. Australia dismantling Turkey. Japan refused to roll over against the Netherlands. The expanded 48-team format was supposed to create easier groups for the big nations — turns out, not so much.

The Results Worth Talking About

#1  Australia 2–0 Turkey

Nobody saw this coming. Turkey came in as the seeded side in Group D. Australia came in as the team most people had already written off. Nestory Irankunda opened the scoring in the 27th minute with a first touch and finish that would have looked good in any match at this level. Connor Metcalfe doubled it in the 75th, driving low from outside the box past goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir. Turkey had chances but couldn’t convert, and Australia held a clean sheet. The result puts Australia level on points with the USA at the top of Group D.

#2  Brazil 1–1 Morocco

Brazil fans in New York showed up expecting a routine opening win. They got a draw against a Morocco side that thoroughly deserved it. Morocco have been to a World Cup semifinal more recently than Brazil. They are not a surprise package anymore. Vinicius Jr. rescued a point for Brazil, but the team looked disjointed for long stretches. If this is Brazil’s level heading into the group stage, the knockout rounds could get uncomfortable fast.

#3  Netherlands 2–2 Japan

Japan’s 2022 wins over Germany and Spain were not flukes. They showed it again here. Netherlands led 2–1 and looked set to hold on. Daichi Kamada had other ideas. His 88th-minute equalizer sent the AT&T Stadium crowd into a frenzy and gave Japan a point they fully earned. Three goals came in a 13-minute spell in the second half. It was the best game of the tournament so far. Japan is a dark horse again.

#4  Qatar 1–1 Switzerland

Switzerland had 23 shots. They controlled the match almost entirely. And they still couldn’t beat Qatar. Boualem Khoukhi’s late goal for Qatar was one of those moments that reminds you why people actually watch football. The draw hands Switzerland just one point from a game they should have won by two or three. Qatar may not advance, but they’ve already made their mark on this group.

#5  Sweden 5–1 Tunisia

Less of an upset, more of a statement. Sweden’s 5-1 win over Tunisia was their biggest at a World Cup since 1938. Yasin Ayari scored twice. Sweden were in complete control from the opening half-hour. They now lead Group F ahead of Netherlands and Japan, which is not where most people would have placed them before the tournament started.

 What June 15 Holds

Today’s schedule: Belgium vs Egypt, Spain vs Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia vs Uruguay, Iran vs New Zealand. Results will be available this evening.

If Belgium drop points to Egypt — with Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush leading the line — it would rank among the biggest shocks of the opening round. Watch that one closely.
