UEFA is expanding the use of VAR (Video Assistant Referee) in men’s club competitions, with more matches utilizing the technology than ever before. In the 2023/24 season.

An additional 239 matches across the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, and UEFA Europa Conference League will implement VAR.

For the UEFA Champions League, VAR will be introduced in all qualifying rounds for the first time in its history, adding 63 matches compared to the previous season, where it was used from the third qualifying round. The preliminary round in Iceland already saw successful implementation, and it will now be used in the first and second qualifying rounds across Europe.

In the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Europa Conference League, VAR will be introduced for the first time in the 2023/24 qualifying rounds, starting from the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round and the UEFA Europa Conference League play-offs. This marks a significant increase in the number of matches with VAR in these competitions, with the UEFA Europa League having a 26% increase (36 matches), and the UEFA Europa Conference League experiencing a 311% increase (140 matches), including group stage matches.

Looking ahead to the new Club Competitions cycle starting in the 2024/25 season, VAR will continue to be used in all UEFA Champions League rounds, while it will also be introduced in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League. Additionally, there is a possibility of introducing VAR before the play-offs of the UEFA Europa Conference League, pending a feasibility study due to the high number of matches.

Since its introduction in the 2018/19 season of the UEFA Champions League knock-out phase, UEFA has implemented VAR in a total of 1648 matches across club and national team competitions.
