Sinner and Tsitsipas Impress in Dominant Wins

Sinner

Jannik Sinner, the fourth-seeded Italian player, showcased his title aspirations at the Australian Open, storming into the second week without dropping a set. He delivered a dominant performance, defeating Sebastian Baez 6-0, 6-1, 6-3 in the third round on Margaret Court Arena. Sinner’s clean hitting, featuring six aces and 34 winners, proved too much for the 26th-seeded Argentine, securing victory in less than two hours. Expressing his satisfaction with the playing conditions, Sinner emphasized making the right decisions and capitalizing on every opportunity.

“I loved the conditions today because there was no wind and no sun,” said Sinner. “I felt great on the ball. I made the right decisions, and I used every chance I had.”

Seventh-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas also delivered an impressive performance, defeating Luca Van Assche 6-3, 6-0, 6-4. Tsitsipas is set to face No. 12 Taylor Fritz in the upcoming match, who secured a victory against Fabian Marozsan with a scoreline of 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2.

Novak Djokovic, the ten-time Australian champion, continued his campaign with a night match against Tomas Martin Etcheverry. Local favorite Alex de Minaur competed against Flavio Cobolli of Italy.

Sinner, who concluded the previous season as one of the hottest players on the tour, led Italy to its first Davis Cup triumph in late November. Despite raising eyebrows by extending his holiday and skipping warm-up tournaments, Sinner’s form in the initial rounds of the Australian Open has justified his decision.

“In general, I feel really great here,” stated Sinner. “I’m really happy with how I’m feeling right now. Obviously, matches are a little bit different [from training], and let’s see how I react in the next rounds, but at the moment I’m going well.”

Sinner’s previous best run at the Australian Open was reaching the quarterfinals in 2022. The odds favor his return to the last eight, facing Karen Khachanov in the fourth round. Sinner has won two of their three meetings, with the lone loss occurring at the 2020 U.S. Open when Sinner was still a teenager.

As the Australian Open progresses, the competition remains fierce, with top players aiming to secure their spots in the later stages of the tournament. The performances of Sinner, Tsitsipas, and Fritz have added excitement to the event, promising more thrilling matchups in the upcoming rounds.
