Shoaib Malik: Babar Azam Captaincy Advice

Shoaib Malik

Former Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik has suggested that Babar Azam should step down from his captaincy role following Pakistan’s humiliating loss to India in the World Cup. Malik, a former Pakistan skipper, argued that Babar’s leadership lacked innovative thinking, making him unfit for the captain’s role.

Malik expressed his opinion, stating, “I gave an opinion in the past as well that Babar Azam should leave captaincy. This is my personal opinion. Babar does not think out of the box as a captain. He is doing captaincy, but the improvement is not coming. He can do wonders for Pakistan as a player.”

Additionally, Malik proposed, “Shaheen Afridi should become captain in white ball cricket in case Babar Azam resigns.”

However, Malik’s viewpoint faced criticism from Mohammed Yousuf, who cited Imran Khan’s journey as captain, emphasizing that even great players need time to succeed. Yousuf stated, “Imran Khan captained in 1983 and 1987 and lost both times before winning on his third attempt in 1992. Any good player should be allowed to continue as a captain for a long time. He is the captain because he has the ability.”

Notably, this isn’t the first time Malik has advised Babar to relinquish the captaincy and concentrate on his individual performance. In a TV interview earlier this year, Malik shared similar sentiments, saying, “If I was in Babar’s place, or those people who guide him, they should tell him that Babar should quit captaincy. And focus just as a player. Pakistan team will also benefit from this.”

Despite the pressure on his captaincy, Babar Azam remains confident and stated that his leadership tenure should not be judged solely based on one match. He emphasized that he believes in destiny and that a single match would not determine his fate as captain.

Pakistan faced a morale-denting loss against India, and Babar Azam, along with wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan, was criticized for their timid batting performance. The lack of assertiveness allowed India to make a comeback and limit Pakistan to a below-par total. In addition, Babar’s leadership during the defense was called into question.

Babar Azam’s future as Pakistan’s cricket captain remains a topic of discussion, with differing opinions on whether he should continue in the role.
