Nathan Bishop, the Manchester United goalkeeper, has completed a permanent transfer to Sunderland for an undisclosed fee.

The 23-year-old initially joined Manchester United from Southend United in 2020 and recently featured in a friendly match against Wrexham in San Diego.

Having showcased his abilities during a successful loan season with Mansfield Town in 2021/22, the Black Cats secured his signature ahead of their Championship opener against Ipswich Town managed by Kieran McKenna on Sunday.

Sunderland has a good relationship with Manchester United, having had Amad on loan last season, where the Ivory Coast international thrived under Tony Mowbray’s management.

Nathan Bishop will provide competition for England Under-21 prospect Anthony Patterson at the Stadium of Light, as the Wearsiders aim for promotion back to the top flight for the first time since 2016/17 after facing play-off disappointment earlier this year.

During the previous Premier League season, Bishop was on the bench for Manchester United four times and made four appearances in the Papa Johns Trophy.

The entire team at Manchester United wishes Nathan the best of luck at his new club. Manager Erik ten Hag presented him with a shirt signed by the players after the Las Vegas friendly with Borussia Dortmund, recognizing his contribution and service to the club.
