Man United Anticipates Martial Exit in Summer

Man United

Man United is anticipating the departure of Anthony Martial in the summer, according to a source from ESPN, despite manager Erik ten Hag’s indication of ongoing contract negotiations. Ten Hag revealed in a news conference that the club has not activated an extension to Martial’s deal that would have extended his stay at Old Trafford until June 2025.

While the Dutchman mentioned that discussions are taking place with Martial and his representatives, a source suggests that the talks are unlikely to result in a new contract. Without reaching fresh terms, the Frenchman is set to leave on a free transfer in the upcoming summer. Having been with Manchester United for eight-and-a-half years since his move from Monaco in 2015, Martial has scored 90 goals in 317 games.

Martial has been sidelined for the last month due to illness, and Ten Hag expressed doubt about the 28-year-old’s availability for the FA Cup third-round match against Wigan Athletic on Monday.

During the same news conference, Ten Hag confirmed that one-year extensions for Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Victor Lindelöf have been triggered, binding the pair under contract until 2025. However, the club has decided against activating a similar option for Raphaël Varane but remains open to extending the defender’s contract on reduced terms. Varane’s contract is set to expire in June, and he has been free to negotiate with clubs outside the Premier League since January 1.

In the midst of these developments, Manchester United is nearing a loan agreement with Borussia Dortmund for Jadon Sancho. Dortmund is expected to pay a small loan fee and contribute to the 23-year-old’s wages. Ten Hag remained tight-lipped about the potential loan deal, stating, “I can’t say anything about that. We have to wait and see how things are going. When we have news, we will tell you. I can’t say anything about this subject because there is no news.”

As the situation unfolds, it appears that Anthony Martial’s tenure at Man United is heading toward a conclusion, with the club preparing for his departure in the upcoming summer transfer window. The ongoing negotiations mentioned by Ten Hag might not result in a contract extension, paving the way for Martial to leave on a free transfer. This development marks the end of an era for Martial, who has been with the club for over eight years and has been a notable presence on the pitch, contributing significantly with 90 goals in 317 games.

Additionally, the club’s decision to trigger extensions for Wan-Bissaka and Lindelöf underscores their commitment to retaining certain players. However, the contrasting stance on Varane, opting against an extension but remaining open to negotiations, adds an element of uncertainty to the defensive lineup. The potential loan of Jadon Sancho to Borussia Dortmund further highlights the dynamic nature of Man United transfer activities, with Ten Hag keeping details under wraps until official announcements are made. The upcoming months are poised to bring significant changes to the squad, making it a crucial period for Manchester United and its fans.
