Liverpool and Egypt Grapple with Star’s Injury

Liverpool

Liverpool star player, Mohamed Salah, has returned to the United Kingdom for treatment on a posterior injury sustained during Egypt’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign. The Egyptian Federation confirmed Salah’s safe return but remains uncertain about his availability for the remainder of the tournament.

Salah, a crucial figure for both Liverpool and the Egyptian national team, left the pitch during Egypt’s 2-2 draw with Ghana on January 18. Initially diagnosed with a hamstring strain, it was believed he would miss only the next two matches for Egypt. However, as the severity of the injury became apparent, Salah opted for more intensive rehabilitation back at Liverpool.

On Tuesday, Salah arrived in the UK, leaving the Egyptian Federation unsure about his return to the Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast. Mohamed Murad, the EFA’s Media Officer, expressed uncertainty, stating, “We don’t know [when we can expect him back]. Salah is a great player, and a player who everyone in Egypt loves. We were hoping for him [to be here] with us.”

Salah’s absence was notable during Egypt’s recent draw with Cape Verde, where he watched from the sidelines. The initial prognosis from the Egyptian Federation suggested a potential return for Salah at the quarterfinal stage of AFCON, scheduled for February 2 and February 3, should Egypt progress.

However, Salah’s representative, Ramy Abbas Issa, offered a less optimistic outlook, indicating a longer recovery period. Issa stated on social media, “Mohamed’s injury is more serious than first thought, and he will be out for 21-28 days, and not two games. His best chance at participating in the current AFCON is by undergoing intensive rehabilitation in the UK and rejoining the team as soon as he is fit.”

Liverpool sources confirmed alignment with Issa’s assessment of Salah’s recovery timeline, casting doubt on his participation even if Egypt reaches the AFCON final on February 11.

As Egypt progresses to the knockout stage, facing the Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday, Salah’s absence poses a challenge for the national team. The uncertainty surrounding his return adds complexity to Egypt’s campaign, with fans and officials alike expressing disappointment over the star player’s injury.

For Liverpool, Salah’s absence raises concerns about his availability for upcoming crucial fixtures. The team will need to adapt to playing without their talisman as they navigate both domestic and European competitions.

As Salah undergoes rehabilitation in the UK, the focus remains on his recovery and the timeline for his return. The Egyptian Federation, Liverpool, and fans worldwide anxiously await updates on the star forward’s condition, hoping for a swift and successful recovery that allows him to resume playing at the highest level.
